You need to set Edit-Preferences-General-Rating appropriately, too: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Lab_Official:Setting_your_maturity_preferencesand also need to set preferences in each search tab separately.

I love Adult Verification! It is so successful!

Hold on a sec, let me count the online people ... hmm... fully two thirds, I -know- have entered false information. I wonder about the other third. Reason? Not that they are under aged, you can hear it in their voices, the references they make when talking about their past. They don't trust that information to a third party .... and unless Loose Lunatics insist on Police departments sending them letters confirming our identities, they will never know if the information is genuine or not.

I wish that LL would do away with the age verification "system." If they can't trust it enough to ignore ARs for being underage when people have filled it out, then what good is it?

Besides, it's not like the age verification system is the only way to get into Zindra or adult private islands. Nope.. all you gotta do is buy some L$ on the LindeX with a credit card.

It seems that Age Verification is a joke. Appears that there are a significant number of underaged persons playing age-verified avis. Someone age verified them? Or they submitted false information? In any case, what good is it?

And what if someone tells you that the other avi in the room is in fact 12 years old, what do you do?

(Conversely, what if someone claims the other avi in the sim is 12, just to get them in trouble, when they're really perfectly legit?)

Bugs me.

Also, individual parcels can have a designation that only "age verified" avs are allowed and that particular piece does not always work. So if a parcel has that checked, even if you did go thru the full Aristotle piece of crap, you might not be allowed in.

The only thing the Aristotle verification is good for is getting you access to the Adult continent (as a whole) and Adult flagged searches without having to give payment info to LL.

I could use one of my cat's info to age verify using Aristotle. I almost did, but I love my alts too much to muck with that.

Not that many were on at the time and I do this weird thing know as "talking with friends." That I have the reasons I am against Age Verification in my profile means that I discuss it frequently with friends and strangers. The other third were the ones I don't know about.

This is even worse because people that believe in this flawed system will now drop their guards and be committing sexual acts with minors, which unwittingly leads them be being sex offenders and worse.
Now just think ... mummy walks up quietly behind her thirteen year old precious little boy to find him using a female character to have sex with an adult man ...

I want to see how that guy talks his way out of that one.

Correction. That boy is THIRTEEN as in 13 because he is lying about his age, which was against the original rules and he stole his father's identity to be age verified.

Exactly so. He will get a slap on the wrist for being nasty and the adult he was playing with will get handcuffs and a RSO titler when mommy files a RL police report, and LL is subpoenaed for the guy's RL info.

We've been through this before. I have yet to see any credible proof, or even a credible indication that such an act would be illegal.

To avoid rehashing some old points: Yes, in many (but not all) states in the US, sincere belief that the other person is of legal age is not a defense against statutory rape - but this isn't statutory rape. If you have any evidence that such a belief would not be a defense for this, please share it.

Oh, I agree it would be 'a possible' defense, credible even. Enough for acquittal? Dunno, probably has no precedent. RL stat rape in the virtual. Interesting concept and yeah it bothers me, and ties in with the 'kids on the grid' thing. It's an opinion and something that rather horrifies me is all. As long as these threads keep popping up, yeah we've 'been through it before' and will probably 'go through it again.' Because that's what forums do.

A sensible* US judge would allow it to pass, slap the parents on the wrist for being stupid about their own offspring, arrest the adult the minor was with and then "chastise" LL for not doing more in keeping the kid out. Like LL would know if the person behind the keyboard is really 18 or not.

* Sensible is only applied, because this seems to be a trend among judges in the US to side with the parents in cases like this. Never mind that the parents shouldn't be allowed the internet in their home.. or to have kids they don't wanna monitor in the first place...

I'll go further: Many of the laws about online contact with minors explicitly require that the offender know or believe that the other person was a minor. So it's probably not an issue of having to defend. It's a non-starter, the DA wouldn't even press charges.

If we're going to speculate about this, I'll speculate that there's a greater chance of the kid being taken away from the parent for allowing them access to this stuff than there is of the person at the other end getting into trouble.
