On the jira I frequently see people have provided patches to fix irritating bugs or provide some extra functionality.

How does one apply one of these patches, in either Windows XP or Linux?

You don't. Whoever builds the viewer applies the patches.

"builds" in the previous post refers to "whoever takes the source code, compiles it into an actual program that can be executed on a computer, and packages it in some form".

the basic plan to get inofficial patches into a binary would be to point them out to whoever maintains the third party viewer of your choice, then hope ;)

Thanks. And how does one go about -- or where might one look for sources from which to learn -- taking the source code, compiling it and packaging it?

It's painful! However if you get it to work I'm sure you'll be thrilled, i still can't get it to work but I'll try again when I have more time, it takes a long time to compile although there's info on how to speed the process up.

It's easier to get it to work on a Mac (or I suppose Linux) where the compiler is part of the OS.

that is so true.

a good point to look at is http://sldev.free.fr for the cmake-SL script that henry uses to build his coolrelease viewers.

but but if it compiles fast, that means I'll have less time and excuse to be goofing off instead of working!?!?!
