I thought I'd seen them, but I can't seem to find them now.. where could I find a small sandbox I could put in my shop to rez and open boxes, without setting my land to public building?

Just set your land to autoreturn. Then customers can rez out their boxes, but you don't have to worry about griefers placing permanent eyesores.

What some shops do is chop their parcels up so that only limited areas allow building. You don't need any special gadgets for this, it's in with the edit tools for land. You'll just want to plan it so that the rest of your shop isn't eating up the buildable parcel's prims.

You could do what Viktoria suggests, but allowing rez plus setting autoreturn to 5 minutes is the easiest and most customer friendly solution.

Leaving build on where vendors are located can be a very customer-unfriendly move, particularly if any vendors are located more than 50m above ground where the parcel no scripts setting will have no effect.

Scripted objects can defeat autoreturn, and vendor skimmers are still enough of an issue that SL includes them in the official documentation at http://secondlife.com/policy/security/shoppingsafety.php - and a little bit of thought will turn up more fun ideas.
