Large structures in sandboxes

I'm just wondering what the etiquette over setting up large structures at ground level in sandboxes is. I'm not talking about deliberate griefing, but things like hoverships etc.

Normally these are placed up in the sky where they cause no problems. I have recently mounted two of my modules onto a single carrier frame to make a low-altitude static hovering complex, about 80m x 50m. This would normally be used at about 600m, but if I wanted to have it at ground level would that be seen as bad form?

I've done some "large scale work" in a sandbox, but always picked a quieter one and an area away from people to work in.

The most important thing about sandboxes - and one so many people forget - is PICK UP YOUR STUFF BEFORE LOGGING OUT SO THAT OTHERS CAN COME USE THE SPACE!

If the space is available, it won't be seen as bad form. Others could even find it interesting. As Broccoli says, the only thing really seen as bad form is leaving structures behind when you leave.

The biggest problem with working on the ground is the inevitable griefing.

I know, I know! I've got a sky platform above my home which is good for smaller jobs, but once in a while I like to play about with my big toys!

It can be fun though, watching them try every orbitting and griefing trick in the book on their hidden channels when you're in non-phys mode.:)

Settin' up stuff is what a sandbox is for. Just pay attention to the size of the sandbox and traffic when you search.

Some places list sandboxes that are only 512Msq. What good is that? Only for unpacking boxes, I think. There are a couple of sandboxes that are an entire sim in size.

I disagree with some of the replies here, it is in bad form.

When you first arrive at a sandbox, the thing to do is to find a place to work. This means getting away from the entrance or teleport point. Large objects, especially when they're close to the entrance (as I often see), get in the way of finding clear spaces. Sure, you can fly up to search for a quiet spot, but that's disconcerting to newbies who haven't learned why some things fall and others don't.

My approach to a sandbox is the same as my approach to getting on a bus or finding a seat at a Disney World attraction - move all the way to the end, leaving room for the people coming in after you. Normally, I'll just find a spot big enough to rez a Mystitool sky platform, and then go up to a reasonable height. It doesn't matter whether I'm building something big or just testing out a script in an attached bracelet.

An extra benefit to building above ground level is that I have never been griefed in a sandbox.

Thanks for advice. I don't usually work near the landing point. After weighing up the opinions on here I conclude that it is OK for me to have the big module down at ground level in a sandbox.

The reason I'd want to do this is for a photoshoot where it needs to be at ground level. Only, second thoughts, it'll probably get surrounded by burning motorbikes and spinning jet fighters after 5 minutes!

Actually what I normally do is wait until my Beta inventory updates and then set up there, where the sandboxes are usually empty unless the main grid's down or a cube proliferator is at play.

It seems like its all about courtesy. If you are no unreasonably interfering with others ability to us the sandbox then it should not be a problem. If you are making it hard for anyone else to use the ground level then it might be resented, especially if someone else was there first. I usually take my large builds up in the air.

I find it annoying.. but then again I never stay ground level for long.

I rez a single box, go up to 350 or 444 and make it 10x10...and copy it and such to get to my desired building space size. Never seems to bother anyone
