did you wait to see that your inventory was fully loaded? I know I have to wait sometimes for it to load before my things are available.

If clearing your cache didn't work, try deleting the Second Life subdirectory altogether and relogging. This will force a rebuild of your cache and all related indices.
Here's the default locations: In XP the folder is (delete the whole thing): C:\ Documents and Settings \ < your userid > \ Application Data\ SecondLife In Vista the folder is: C:\ Users\ < user name > \ AppData \ Roaming\ SecondLife In a Mac OS: (your Home folder) / Library / Application Support / SecondLife - > Cache or possibly: ~/Library/Caches/SecondLife |

And log into a quite water sim -- Corra is a good one -- and sit on the bottom of the ocean and type in random search strings to help speed up the reload of the inventory items. When the increasing of the count starts to slow, type in another search string.
If all of that fails, then you'll need to open a support ticket. _____________________

When the increasing of the count starts to slow, type in another search string. Aside from clearing your cache this is just as important because if you're fetching on a bad sim then you'll never see much of an improvement. Equally important is to never teleport while your inventory is fetching or you'll miss several dozen to several hundred worth of items until the next time you clear cache & refetch. |

big inventory technique
11-03-2009 16:40
I often dont get my entire inventory loaded with a single log in. I let it load until it stops (short of a full inventory), then log out and quickly log back in. This seems to add the missing items. In rare instances, I relog a third time to get the entire inventory back. Your mileage may vary.

In a Mac OS: (your Home folder) / Library / Application Support / SecondLife - > Cache or possibly: ~/Library/Caches/SecondLife It's ~/Library/Caches/SecondLife. It was the first option until some time last year (I think). And to the OP - have you tried logging into the beta grid and loading it there first? Ann OToole has a very useful blog entry on this subject: http://annotoole.wordpress.com/inventory-blues/ |

I noticed that the number on top of the inventory window fluctuates by +/- 10% between logins... _____________________

I clear cache/refetch every single time I log off/on respectively, the numbers always match (if they don't then it's a rinse-and-repeat but that rarely happens anymore unless I'm silly enough to tp before it finishes). |

This happens to my inventory about once a month, but it only happens on my laptop. When I log on to my husband's desktop computer, my inventory is intact and complete. But when I am on my laptop, anything that is not in boxes disappears. I have opened a support ticket, but to no avail. I have been told that since I have a free basic membership, I cannot have chat support and that a support ticket usually will not resolve a problem such as this.
One of my SL friends, who is much more of a techy than I am (most defnitely!), said that it could be my avatar and my laptop IP address, because prior avatars that I have had have not had this problem--ever. He thinks that when I created my avatar, there was a glitch in the key as it relates to my laptop IP address.... that's why all is well with my husband's computer when I log in to this avatar. I do not want to create a new avatar, because everything I own and my ministry organization and reputation are all tied to "Grace Cuthbertsson." Does anyone else know how this can be fixed.... other than the clearing the cache suggestion. I've tried that and it has not worked. Thanks so much! Grace _____________________

Do other avatars work correctly on your laptop (try having your husband log on from your laptop)?
I might try completely uninstalling the browser and manually deleting the cache folder, and then reinstalling SecondLife. That should clean up everything, even the program settings that don't get cleaned up with the "Clear Cache" button. I'm not sure if the IP address could be an issue, but you can open the start menu and go to "Run" and type in "ipconfig /renew" which will clear your network adapter settings and force your adapter to get a new IP number. |

Hi Veritable, yes, other avatars have correctly run on my laptop without a loss of inventory. I have downbloaded and installed the latest version of SecondLife, but did not delete the old version--or does it uninstall automatically when a later version is installed? Should I uninstall this new version and try reinstalling? Thanks, Grace _____________________

Is the desktop using wired internet and the laptop wireless? If so I'd try using wired internet for the laptop to see if it makes any difference. (Same suggestion if they're both using different internet connections/ISPs) Hi Kitty, the desktop is wired internet and the laptop is wireless. Should that make a difference? I'll check it out and see..... thanks for the suggestion. Grace _____________________

Sometimes when you uninstall, it will leave files behind that do not get overwritten when you reinstall, so some old setting are left behind. |

Hi Kitty, the desktop is wired internet and the laptop is wireless. Should that make a difference? .Since your inventory loads on the desktop the first things to try would be about eliminating things that might be different between the two. |

When things start becoming *this* unexplainably weird on a computer, I treat it as a good sign that it's time for a complete wipe-and-reinstall of Windows.
Or just install Linux. ![]() _____________________
