I just read in the Radio Times that there's to be a documentary featuring SL on UK BBC 2 next week. Tuesday 9:50pm in Scotland, Wednesday 9:50pm rest of UK.

From: someone
"This is an unsettling glimpse of the future. Film maker XX tells the stories of couples who have begun relationships in Second Life, the online world where people create "avatars" (moveable 3-D icons) of themselves and embark on "virtual" affairs."

[you can see where this is headed...]

From: someone
"<RL lady's name> was a depressed American housewife who reinvented herself as a sexy siren in SL, hooked up (digitally) with a British man called <RL man's name>, and drifted away from her husband and children. "It was like being reborn" she says..."

So it sounds as if it's along the lines of "Friends Reunited Ruined My Marriage", but you can bet your bottom dollar (or pound ;-) I'll be watching it and wondering how big a jump in the number of UK SL residents it will cause...

or maybe a big decline in residents as all the possessive husbands sabotage the home PC.

Just that little bit you posted told me it is nothing but a trash piece, with buzzwords like "unsettling". More like a "Hard Copy" or whatever you guys have over there. The so called "Filmaker" should be made to stand in the corner for calling it a Documentary.

Oh good lord.

My brother managed to end up with an American wife. That had nothing to do with SL or even the internet THAT was to do with meeting RL due to business relations. The fact that she was a complete and utter psycho hose beast was neither here nor there. He's still paying the (literal) price on that one.

Think I'll be giving it a miss.

Or just the opposite - husbands signing up to find some women.

I intend to watch it - I hope I remember.

Signing up to find some women.

Blundering about in typical lad fashion. Failing to find women. Reinventing themselves with a feminised version of their rl name and talking about their sister instead of themselves.

Finding women. Being paranoid that they are not women.

Same as usual then really huh.

This sounds to me like the old adage that good news is no news.
I have heard of a few couples now who first met in SL and are now RL. My husband and I were already a couple and joined together, and neither would consider a SL relationship with another person, but it has worked for some couples. No happy marriage is going to fall apart because of some online flirting; there would have to be an underlying problem. It's sad when relationships end, but blaming SL is barmy.
Realistically, SL has been functioning as a virtual meeting place since it began. And when people meet up, sometimes there will be romance. I am heartened by the positive elements of SL, to let those with disabilities dance, ski, skydive. To encourage creativity in architecture, art, clothing design. Where I can meet my friends on 3 continents and talk, laugh, dance.

Sure, SL has its creeps and its drawbacks. But what doesn't?

I'm loving it!

So if she didn't have SL, the "Depressed, bored housewife" would have strayed with the Pizza delivery guy, the mailman, or her husbands best friend. But using SL can throw in the xenophobia, I can see Maury Povich now:
"Marcia was a typical suburban housewife. Husband, 2 cars, 3.2 children, and a 3 and a half bath house in the suburbs. She had it all, but it wasn't enough. One day she found something called Second Life. A seemingly innocent computer game. Innocent , until one day when she gave it all up to run off with an evil brownish hued man, from a another country, who she met online."

Like you say, I guess it's a sign of our media's obsessions that the documentary - sorry, programme - looks like it's about the broken relationship angle rather that the positive aspects of SL you mention above.

I wonder if some documentary maker, somewhere, could sell a programme idea based on the good stuff? There *are* some wonderful aspects to SL - I've met disabled, shy or troubled people who have had their lives improved or transformed by SL.

there are sadly people out there who think SL ruins relationships and family. SL is not to blame for people making decisions... And decisions to do WHAT... be happier? So basically SL is getting trashed for making people happy.... what has this world come to?

Jeez you've got me worried now!

I'm flying out to Wisconsin next week to meet my SL girlfriend in the flesh! I'm assuming she really is a 7 foot tall furry fox in thigh high leather boots - what if she turns out to be just a bored housewife????

Maybe I should rethink this .......

Not our story...
01-24-2008 07:32
I was contacted by a researcher for this programme, who was looking for UK SLers to feature.

My RL wife and I are both on SL and both have SL relationships with other people lasting over a year (so far :P).We both have good SL friends and it keeps us out of the pub.

(Fortunately) the researcher decided that she wasn't interested in our story as SL hadn't ruined our Real Lives and we had no intention of ever meeting SL partners in RL.

It was quite apparent from the conversation I had that the upcoming program would be biased towards a particular negative aspect of SL, which I'm sorry to say is the direction in which our once great Broadcasting Corporation has been heading for some time.

No it was just a good excuse to quote from Father Ted :)

Too true Nicholas hon. Not just the BBC either. Channel 4 is a travesty of what it once was.

As to the drivel that gets shown on BBC America ...
