hi i have created an alt for taking photos with my main for some stuff i am selling on SLX. However my computer is REALLY struggling to have both logged in at once. Is there any way at all that i can log the alt on on a viewer that uses less resources on my computer than the normal viewer and have my main in on the normal viewer to take the pic.

If there is can someone walk me though it step by step ( please i am really not technically minded at all)

Some things that can help:

- Start the subject's session first. In the Network tab, pull the bandwidth slider down as low as you can stand. Also you will want to set each instance of the client to use a different port so that they don't need to waste time rejecting packets that aren't for them. That setting does make you restart the client but there is a payoff.

- In the graphics tab, pull all the subject's graphics settings down to the minimum, even turn on the custom checkbox to see if there is anything else you can stop. You can go lower than 64 on your draw distance if you go into Advanced->Debug Settings and change RenderFarClip. This won't be reflected in the preferences window in the current viewers but it still works (try some ridiculously low value like 5 and watch your frames zoom! =) ).

- Get the subject in the general area you want and let everything rez before you start up the second session, then there won't be as much competition for resources.

- Then for the photographer's session, nudge up the bandwidth graphics settings to capture everything you need but no more. You'll just have to fiddle around to figure how much you need for your shots.

Do you need both logged in at once? Can't you just use the camera controls to take pictures of yourself/it?

I dont NEED them logged in at once, but having thrm logged in at once saves me a lot of excess work in photoshop as i can have a whole display pic done with one shot on SL

The important part when running multiples is the network settings. If you are on cable then lower it down to about 250 to 300 kbps. Until I learned that trick, no other settings tweaks helped and I could only run 2 copies for a short time before I had to log. Since that time, if I lower it even further I can run 3 copies for hours with no problems except of course for it taking longer for stuff to happen.

Unfortunately graphics aren't considered a basic function. Haven't tried it but what about irfanview and a screenshot?

you could give the Ajax viewer a try. it is basically a text-only version of the SL viewer. most usual functions are possible in it, my partner managed to chat, IM and use a dance ball without using the regular SL viewer.

The viewer is web-based, there is no actual program to be downloaded.

Wow how did your friend manage to find a danceball with the ajax viewer since you can't see anything other than the background screen?

oops, my bad. i may have invited her onto my chim, she just had to say yes to the blue pop-up.

or she did /99 help for my chim menu

either way she was dancing, and i was impressed lol :D

however my partner has now confirmed that clicking on an object is not possible with the Ajax viewer, which may well render it useless for the OP's intentions :(

Wait, I still don't understand what you can do with an alt that you can't do using camera controls from your main.

You do know that you can change the camera position to look at yourself from any angle, yes? how is this different from what you could do with an alt?

You might look at some of the clients made to be used as camping bots. They aren't very good about clothing, but I believe some people have found workarounds for that. Sorry that this is a vague lead, but it least it's an area to look at.

There are other viewers - Nicholaz's and OnRez's come to mind, but I don't know how resource-intensive they are. Could you maybe give the password for your alt to a trusted person - eg. your partner - and ask them to log in as your alt just for the photo-taking sessions?

i don't know for certain but i would guess the OP needs two av's in the scene at once, for example to shoot them on couples dance balls or something similar...

You can use SLeek for this, which DOES allow you to touch (click on) and sit on objects. But it lists ALL the objects in your "vicinity" which seems to be most of the sim you're in. On the plus side, the object list DOES have a search function, so if you know the name of the object or prim you want the alt to sit on, you can find it and sit on it.

SLeek is text-only and is just 200k IIRC.

That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...

...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.

I use SLeek, and can vouch for it. Though it doesn't list everything, for some reason some things don't always register in the list. Also, you will always accept inventory offers and such, but will be shown an error dialog box when you get them.

And size on disk for the lseek folder for me is 2.73 MB

Eclectic,
There is an app called AvaPet 2 which quote:
"runs a general use bot for Second Life. It is a windows application that connects an avatar to SL, but instead of being controlled by another user through the standard SL client, the avatar is controlled with chat & IM commands in-world. As a result, you are able to have full control over
another avatar in Second Life, without wasting precious system resources on running multiple copies of the standard client.
How Does It Work?
AvaPet 2 connects to SL, and controls the avatar using the LibSL API. LibSL is a community project that has reversed engineered the Second Life protocol, and created an Application Programming Interface. Using LibSL and the C# programming language..........."
I have no idea if it can do what you need but if it's a cut-down system that uses less resource it may be what you're after.
I saw it in SLX and Zetaphor Tengu is the name of the creator.
Can't vouch for it any way.

Good luck.

I haven't really read the rest of the thread, so sorry if I'm repeating other peoples' suggestions. What I do if I want two accounts logged on at once is to have one viewer with all the graphics settings set to the minimum setting, particles off etc etc. Use the Client menu to turn of pretty much everything and set it to wireframe view. You end up with a nearly all black screen with just wireframes of your avatar and other avatars. You can flick to the other viewer you have open that has all the graphics on your usual setting to see what's going on, and just keep alt+tabbing backwards and forwards to move each avatar and take your pics.

I saw that if I open 3 viewers and only then I login with my 3 me it runs faster if I login one and then open another viewer and so on…

And talking about couple pics… where can I find a free studio with couple poses that I can use in world?
