Have you looked in your object's contents?

Yesterday I pulled out an object from my inventory that I hadn't used for some time. While editing it I happened to look in the contents -- not expecting to find anything as the object (a sheepskin rug) was never animated. To my amazement it was stuffed full of random items -- clothes, poses, plants, animations, landmarks, notecards.
I started to look into the contents of other stored objects, and found more stuff in them too. Some of it I recognised as things I thought I had lost from my inventory ages ago.
I am wondering if the items were intended for my Lost and Found folder and somehow got returned into the wrong place(s). If that is so, I suggest other people looking for lost items might be able to find them hidden inside stored objects in their inventory.
Yay, this is my first post, though I have read and learned from Resident Answers for ages!
PS: Don't know why it says I have made 10 posts, honestly this is my first!

One of the mysteries of the universe and we will never, ever know the answer. Big sigh.

*waves* hi Craig!! OH GOD I remember the first time I did that!! I learned quickly not to drag folders (especially onto one's self, too easy to miss) and learned to right click and add or replace outfit (for changing clothes) and that only things with the box icon will "rez" in world hehe

Hiyas : ), yes this thread rather underlines what I wrote in my second entry on that JIRA, the reason it wont get many votes and its not thought of as a BIG problem is people do not know they did it!

PS: Don't know why it says I have made 10 posts, honestly this is my first! I wondered why I found 9 of your posts included in a post that I made a while back!! On topic: I used to tell people that I found a body in my basement. It was the first shape that I bought in my early SL weeks. I found it in a floor prim after I "lost" something else and the vendor helped me to find it.

In your case, OP, yes it sounds like the JIRA issue. But some designers do include these in their work. Think of them like DVD or game 'easter eggs' you have to find.

No idea if I've ever done this, because anything that I'm aware I've lost has eventually been returned in inventory rebuilds. Plus, I guess it could happen with copy items and they'd just appear not to rez, but remain in inventory?
Given the massive inventories of many long-time residents, and the difficulty of checking, many thousands of items could remain hidden in this way.

From: Alexa Susanto I found something in my rug, can't recall what but wondering if I can get it out? Edit the rug, go to the Contents tab and drag the items into your inventory. From there you can drag them in-world/wear them/attach them as appropriate. Be careful not to drag out any scripts or notecards that are meant to be in scripted objects.

This happens sometimes when you think you're giving an item to someone, or even trying to rez the item on top of a prim. If the prim is modifiable, sometimes the object goes inside the prim instead of being rezzed on top. At the time you just think it was a kinda rez misfire, and you try again. For couples this happens a lot when you're sitting on cuddle poseballs. You try to pass a photo or a notecard or a gift to your sweetie and instead of dropping it on thier Avi you accidentally drop it in the invisible poseball that you didn't realize is RIGHT in front of your camera. The item simply does not pass between you and you try again. Couples - check the contents of your favorite poseballs on occasion. It can be rather amusing. It's also fun to check the prim contents of the floors in rental units for the lost & forgotten items of past tenants.

From: Alexa Susanto I found something in my rug, can't recall what but wondering if I can get it out? I received a Christmas gift last year that included a really nice rug. It has been in our bedroom since then. About two months ago I was building and trying to rez a prim on the rug (it is very large) and apparently targeted the rug by mistake and saw something in the contents tab. Upon extricating it, discovered some *ahem* lingerie that belonged to my friend. ~ ~ ~ After the OPs post, I think I'm going to go check the objects around my house and in my inventory. (Still missing some stuff that never reappeared.)

Me, too. I just took a look at the Knowledge Base article on Inventory Management (which would come up for anyone putting 'lost' into the search). Sure enough, this is fourth on the list of eleven suggestions. But I'll bet a lot of us don't really stop to think to check household objects for their contents.

Oh gosh I'm a liar. I'd completely forgotten those early posts. First time I've started a thread though.
I read Resident Answers every day and find it so helpful. Keep up the good work, guys!
