I wonder who broke the central server?
My theory is that one of the San Francisco hippies working in the colo had one hit too many on his mini-bong in his gas-electric vehicle while on break, causing him on his return to work to bump into the server rack and knock over and break a lavalamp, causing molten wax and lavalamp fluid to run down the server rack shorting out several motherboards and making some hard drives get stuck from solidified wax inside.

My money's on a worker at the Texas site got drunk and began randomly shooting up server racks. Good news is he'll probably get the death penalty, even if nobody got hurt.

You might be right, Anti, it's happened plenty of times before.
Although maybe it was a meteor strike.

It was the Rooshians, who mistakenly thought SL was too damn close to South Ossetia.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville I wonder who broke the central server? Don't ask. And whatever you do, do NOT call Central Services. They'll pull out all the ducts in your house, wrap you in red tape, and bury you in paperwork.

Rumor has it that weekend data center staff in Texas were bored, hauled in a massive sound system, and had a rave. Unfortunately, they placed the 2500 watt subs too close to the SAN storage racks which house the fragile asset server filesystem, and began spinning old Torley Wong techno tracks. Already seriously edging, they began a Jack Daniels shooter contest, and after 6 shots each, decided to turn up the Torley Techno to "Eleven". That would have been about the time we began to notice problems in-world.

I assure you, the Ministry is very scrupulous about following up and eradicating any error. If you have any complaints which you'd like to make, I'd be more than happy to send you the appropriate forms.

Katt Linden had a nervous breakdown after being called out about censoring the website and about how insecure the forums were. Discovering just how thankless and hopeless her job really was, she went postal and took out headquarters.

methinks it was a Linden Tree revolt..instead of rezzing trees in the road they started rezzing rezzers that rezzed more rezzers and then they took over.

what is strange...... When I went to sign out, after the issuesd warning... whatever I was on all freakin day I needed to get off, anyway.......... The screen suddenly went back to about an hour or so prior when I went afk to go get my daughter, I was sitting at my tea table in that silly slumped shoulders position, but when I actually closed out the window to leave I was biding farewell to a friend on the other side of the sim in the lighthouse, how freakin freaky is that?

Anyone remember this: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1040_22-148320.htmlFrom: Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale It can scale to infinity. The underlying architecture of the Internet and of 'Second Life' is perfectly scalable.
At one time they said they were gearing up for millions of weekly sign-ups and millions of concurrent users...

I'm thinking that's still true. It is the timing that's off.

From: Zaphod Kotobide I'm thinking that's still true. It is the timing that's off. It isn't possible with their current game plan. To many technical limitations. However they may find there just isn't "millions of people" that want to play SL at the same time anyway as we have seen the significant drop of new "unique" sign-ups over the last year and hardly a push in the currently on-line numbers over the last several months. Good thing because of what happened today. Actually the grid system itself is very scalable as you can add as many sims as you can. The problem is the asset and database server system is not. Here is the blog post I was looking for. http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/contingency-measures-to-ensure-service-as-second-life-grows/From: Robin Linden Beyond that we are building ambitious plans for re-architecting the Grid, so that in the future we can realize the full potential of the Second Life Grid to support millions of concurrent users.
