Page Down (PgDn) on a Mac

I have a friend who has Swimmer 1.1 but she can't swim underwater because the Mac keyboard doesn't have PgDn as a separate key. The directional arrows (speaking as a lifelong PC user) on the Mac have PgDn as the down arrow. Remapping wouldn't be fun for her ... any ideas?

Thanks.

I own/use many Macs and only two current kinds of Mac keyboards lack a PgDwn key -- the ones on laptops, and the new wireless bluetooth minikeyboard.

In both cases, Page Down is achieved by holding the fn key then pressing the down arrow. On laptops & the bt minikeyboard the fn key is in the lower left corner.

And while we're at it:

fn + Up = PgUp
fn + Left = Home
fn + Right = End

All full size Mac desktop keyboards for at least the last five years or more have all the usual keys include Page Down.

Adding to that, you should be able to use the E and C keys to move up and down (and WASD as arrow keys)

Thanks from me too. I've had my MacBook Pro for 6 months and all this time the only way I could hover up or down was to use the SL viewer movement control panel. Sheeesh.

What does control down arrow do?

I don't have a mac and am not familiar with it at all. When I looked this question up on Google I saw lots of pages apearing to say that control down arrow moves you a page down, which sounds like what the page down key does.

CTRL down arrow does nothing, has no effect on my MacBook Pro.

I still don't understand why anyone would be using arrow keys and pg up and down when you can use WASD and E&C as mentioned above. Using the latter only takes one hand and leaves the other free to use the mouse at the same time.

Because they're intermixing movement and chat, perhaps?

One real problem with PageDown on a Mac without dedicated keys (that is, using Fn + arrows) is that it doesn't work at all under Boot Camp, at least not in my experience. It is SUPPOSED to, and works in other applications, but not in Second Life.

It's a taste thing. I am like you -- I prefer using WASD and EC, because I like having one hand on the mouse. As a result I do a lot of clicking chat windows on and off. Others prefer to use both hands on the keyboard so they can move while they are chatting without activating and de-activating the chat window. It's really a question of preference.

If the arrow keys don't work how do you fly around? I've been trying to figure this out as I'm using SL in Boot Camp?

I think some of the confusion also comes with the fact that some keyboards use pictures instead of abbreviations. As this is my 1st computer - (Mac+'french' keyboard) - I still am confused with the meaning of a few 'pictures'. There's a bunch of keys with arrows on them, not just the 4 obvious ones. I had to try them all out. Now, if I want to fly, I just use the mini 'window' you can activate thru the client menu.

I use 'E' to start flying, jump and hold, and wasd to navigate with E and C for up or down, and F to stop flying..

DUnno if all that works on a mac o.o

BTW I use WASD to navigate at all times, as it allows me to switch to typing faster since my left hand is already on the left side of the keyboard

In case some don't know... press Esc a few times to close the chat bar and/or other windows you type text into, and you should be able to move using W, A, S, D, E, and C.

Thanx for the WASD tips. I knew about them, (and they do work on Macs) just didn't get in the habit - or just plain forgot about them... It IS much more functional.

Atashi, this may be a really dumb question, but what do you mean by the 'fn' key? Just curious...

I am assuming she is on a laptop. She needs to hopd down the function (fn) key and the down arrow.

On my PowerBook and on my 'aluminum' bluetooth mini keyboard there is a key in the absolute lower left corner which is labled "fn". This is what I refer to as the fn key. I suppose it might mean 'function' although that might confuse people with the other 'function keys' i.e. F1, F2, F3, et cetera.

I've seen the "fn" key used by many other laptops, not just Apple. Dell and Toshiba are two that come to mind that definately use an "fn" key to enable various extra functions on their laptop keyboards... not just Page-Up Page-Down and so on, but a numeric keypad, and laptop-specific functions like toggling the external VGA port on and off, et cetera.

And to answer another question about why use the arrow keys instead of WSAD? Because the arrow keys are on the right hand side which leaves my left hand free to use my track ball. I prefer this arrangement as I can also freely mouse around with my left hand while taking notes with my right.
