I'm trying to organize my inventory and objects, and one thing I wanted to do was box up everything I've created. But I've been unable on numerous items to see who the creator is, unless I drag the item out and rez it. Then it shows, but often I get that ??? ??? for the group.
It's maddening.
So the creator shows if it's rezzed, but on some objects, it's unknown when it's in my inventory. I don't want to have to rez a billion objects for this inventory cleanup.
I've tried logging out many times, even waited days hoping it would clear up. But it's still that way.
Am I missing something?

The ??? creator thing is a long-standing issue; see http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-441The explanation there, by Lex Neva, that From: someone In-world, the ceator you see for the object is the creator of the prims themselves. The creator for the inventory may differ, and you'll see that if you check it in-world. In inventory, what you see in the properties window is a "summary" of information for the entire object/linkset/collection of objects contained in the inventory item. When multiple creators exist in the item, you see " unknown)". I don't think this is necessarily wrong... although I might prefer to see " multiple)". makes sense, I guess. If you buy something from one of our shops and inspect it carefully, you'll usually find you have something where some of the prims she made, some of them I made, she made the animations and some of the scripts are MLPV2 and some I wrote. Who should it show as the creator?

From: Phil Deakins The creator of the root prim. Why? The root prim may well -- particularly if it's a megaprim -- be full rights and yet the item, because of the rights on other integral parts created by others, be of far more restricted rights (or even none at all) and show as such in your inventory. Why is the creator of the root prim necessarily important?

Because usually, the actual creator, rather than a contributing creator, would be the creator of the root - I think I had this when I rented out skyboxes (my creations) and the only megaprims were made by wotsisname. I used a 20x20 floor which was a nice prim for the root. Later I realised that wotsisname was the named creator of the whole skybox, so I relinked it to change the root. I'd rather have a creator's name than a load of question marks, and it seems to me that, if you have to choose one name of several, then the root prim's creator is more likely to be the main creator than contributing creators.

I have almost always had to actually rez an item to see the creator. For me, just looking at the Properties from the Inventory prim item has never told me anything.

Thanks for the explanation. Don't like it, but at least I get it now.

I'm sure this is changing now either by error or design, it was that once, quite recently I could have three objects, called 'object 1', 'object 2' and 'Dekka Birdbath' now what I could do was select object 1 and object 2 and then select 'Dekka Birdbath' as the last object take it to inventory and the object would be called 'Dekka Birdbath' but no not now, when I do that it is just called 'object'.
Edit: Hey I just realised this is like my first rant ever!

Perhaps this is by design to prevent people who made minor parts of the object from being considered the creator?
Unfortunately, from personal experience this doesn't work. I get IMs all the time asking me about products I never made because someone made a product using some prim or script of mine as a basis for their product and somehow the creator shows up as me and not them. It's crazy to get IMs like "I bought your big (house, car, plane, penis, vibrator, etc.) and I can't get it to work or the color is wrong. Can you fix it for me?". LOL
