I have Photoshop CS4, and sadly, my video card is a putz and wont support the 3D options. I have the Nvid 5200, I suppose that's a dinosaur now. My question is..can anyone recommend a card that can support it, and about how much would it cost? I'll ask Santa to bring me one.

My stock answer for most of these questions is: Just like cars, speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?
GeForce 9800 GT. 130 bucks. This is a typical, mid priced card and will run Photoshop and Second Life with ease. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150323 GeForce GTX 280. US$430. Low to mid range workstation or upper end home use card. With a dual monitor set up, you can run SL in windowed mode (maximized) on one screen and Photoshop on the other without a problem. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130365 GeForce 7600 GS. 50 bucks. It will run SL and Photoshop and maybe even at the same time, but the graphics lag would be bad. Trun the setting down and be sure particals is set to zero. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500030 |

That's really not a bad price, either, thanks Yosef. ![]() _____________________

You might want check the power requirements for your desired card and the output of your power supply before buying.

That's really not a bad price, either, thanks Yosef. ![]() The 9800GT is identical in performance to the previous generation 8800GT for SL purposes; it has the same number of graphic processing pipelines (with the same capabilities) and they run at the same speed. It consumes a bit less power (next generation fab process), might be a bit more overclockable, has some enhancements for HD video decoding, and sells for the same price or less than the old one did. I've seen them for as little as $100 after rebate ($130 before), so shop around. |

the 280's are v.nice >=) but also vey specific... there isn't a lot of call for what the 2XX series does on most home machines, unless you do LOTS of 3d design and video transcoding (or other things most home users don't do)
the 9800 gx2's are also nice, and frankly better for gaming, hard to find atm abut cheaper overall (ok maybe about ~30$US more than a 260). though I hear they are phasing out support for these. the 9800 gtx's are the stable point, near top of the line, great performance for gaming and basic use. the 8800's aren't bad, and should handle most anything just fine, even newer games. as a bonus, anything from about 8600 up will run nVidia physics, so if you do ever upgrade, just keep the card (assuming you have the space on your board) and use it for a PPU... the 7600 series up will also support this but my understanding is that it's not as good. _____________________
