Hi, I have my home on the mainland, but I was wondering, is it possible to have snow? Is there parts of the mainland that 'naturally' get snow, or do you have to create your own prim snow? Or do you have to be on a private sim to have a winter wonderland?

There are parts of the mainland that have snow on the ground, but none that have it snowing.

There's a big chunk of snow mainland up on the old continent. It's extremely rare to find a decent parcel for sale but on the other hand they tend not to be valued very highly.
Try this: secondlife://Boreal/176/32/0 which will conveniently put you on top of a snow parcel that I have up for sale there. _____________________

I own snow land in Nordica. It's snow land all year long. There are quite a few snow areas. When I was looking for snow land in Sep-Nov, I went all over trying to find the right plot. I used the land for sale search feature through using the keyword "Snow" or "Snow land" and found quite a bit of the stuff for sale and exploring.
There is also a list of all the snow land I found on the SL web page in September, but I couldn't find the link when I looked just now. It must still be there, though. _____________________

There's also the option of making snow on a non-snow sim. Weather systems that do this are popular before Christmas; unfortunately, the good ones are mostly non-transferable, so it's probably impossible to get one "second hand" from somebody who's seen enough snow for the season.
Also, they're not without lag effects, both on the sim and the viewer. The falling snow is a particle effect, and the ground cover is made up of prims, generally temp-rezzed (and I think phantom physical until they collide with the ground). There are also static sculpty snow prims. They generally look horrid IMHO. |

I have lived in snow sims the whole 3 Rez Day yrs in SL.
A lot is yes over priced but, there there a lot going at great prices. And no they don't snow on their own, you can make or buy a weather or snow maker which covers as much or as little of the land you want. Only problem is they snow into! houses, depending how you place them. Feel free to IM me inworld if you like, I can show you different snow efx or some snow sim parcels I wish I could get but am tiered out that are great. _____________________

I have a lot in Larsson that I was blessed to buy back. It is gorgeous up there. Very unlikely I would part with it again. That parcel and my sim satisfies my rl dream of having bot a summer and winter homes.

All the effects of snow are only textures, so having snow on mainland is a matter of using a few prims and designing the snow textures. There are snow textures in the library folder that LL use.
The back end of my mainland waterfront plot (8096sqm) is covered in snow on 3 levels and the base was only 16 prims to cover the whole area. All the pathways are designed in the texture reducing the need to use additional prims so it can be done and not necessarily at the expense of so many prims. The only disadvantage is the area will normally be flat as you cannot cover mountains or hills with prims but you can use scuplts obviously. With regards snow falling there are freebie scripts available and ones for sale and all pretty much do the same thing. The only problem with snow machines is depending on the size of land they can be very time consuming to setup as they all snow through your builds. If you want a snow machine to cover a large area try and find one that can delete itself or you end up with loads of beacons scattered over your land taking up your prim count. |
