Finding out if a last name is available?

Is there an easy way to find out which last names are still active for new avs? I wanted to create a new av with my same last name but so far can't seem to find out if it is even available. I tried going to the new user creation area but the last names there change depending on what first name you put in. Anyway, before I play luck of the draw a few thousand times, I would like to know if my last name is even still available.
