Hi All

I've been asking this question around SL for a little while, and so far not got a "definitive" answer.

In a group IM, a few residents claimed to have seen avatars with linebreaks in their Group titles. When I suggested they were just using an attachment with floating text, I was told that it wasn't that in no uncertain terms!

I tried contacting one of the avatars that had supposedly been seen with this, but got no reply.

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to put a linebreak in a group tag. So for example I could have a group tag like:

I
AM
Hippyjim Starbrook

If so, how's it done?

I've never seen a group name with line breaks in it... the line breaks I've seen have always been via titlers through an attachment.

No Response? Could it be a bot with a scripted object?

It's possible the avatar seen with it is a bot - but the person who'd seen it was fairly clear it wasn't an attachment, but a proper group tag.

Unfortunately, I haven't even seen one of these myself, but I felt it was something that should be properly scouted out, so I could get proof one way or another (without risking offending anyone). Besides, if it's true I'd like to be able to do it myself!

Problem is of course....it's impossible to prove a negative.... :)

I figure if I ask enough people, someone who supposedly has one of these things will show up and tell me how it's done.

Tried that - just displays \n - not the linebreak

I'm sure it can't be done with the regular viewer.. You could try sticking a \n into the tag but it would just display a \ and an n.

Maybe the role was created with a hacked viewer or libsl thing?

It's like the case of one former land baroness (or land bot) that had a single word name. I never knew how she managed that.

/n

It should be a forward slash. It has something to do with old dumb terminal keyboards not having a backslash key.

nice try - but no cigar. Just displays the /n

Thanks anyway

Any more suggestions? Proof / disproof?

I can be done. In fact, I am in a group which messes up the group tags just for fun.
It requires a little creative fiddling on protocol level when setting/updating the titles, so it is not available from inside the normal viewer.
There are some obscure restrictions on what can actually be shown that way (including the aforementioned showing only part of the name), and the end result even varies from sim to sim, so it's not something to rely on, and I expect it'll be patched in some future server update.

Thanks Tali

Guessing it was a libsl thing to do the fiddling required.

Good to know we're not going mad anyways.
