This may not be news, but not news to me - Today I had my hands on the keyboard and hit something and suddenly my av starts walking away. I thought I was about to crash, but he kept walking and it didn't quite feel the same way.

In my attempt to stop him I tried the usual buttons and then resorted to anything, which means I was slapping buttons here and there. Eventually I hit the right one and he stopped, but of course I have no idea which one.

The only things I do know is that my av was on autopilot for a bit and this is what showed up in my window: [19:57] Autopilot canceled

Autopilot? Damn! If I knew what I had found, I would have let him keep walking to see how well he maneuvers without me. It really was more like playing the Sims than SL.

Has this always been around? Is there a way to get back to it?

I don't know about the keyboard shortcut you may have found, but if you right-click the ground, the pie will show a choice that says something like "Go Here" and if you select that, you're on "autopilot" until you get there, timeout due to an obstruction, or cancel it. I think ESC cancels it.

Yeah, it's been in there, you can use the pie menu to go to a spot on the ground, or to another avatar. If you want to try it out inside buildings etc., you can play with Advanced->UI->Double-Click Auto-Pilot. It's in the debug menu because it's a little flaky, you can end up walking to stuff you meant to touch etc.

Advanced, UI, Double Click Auto Pilot

Toggles whether Double Clicking engages the Auto Pilot.

For a long time, this only worked on real ground. There is now an option to turn it on even on prim floors.

You double click, your avatar tries to get there.

1.22 viewer, maybe in Advanced somewhere.

You can also trigger autopilot by attempting to sit.

The problem with double-click autopilot is that the SL double-click detection does not work correctly. There is not test to see if the two clicks were on the same UI element or had the same modifiers (you can trigger double-click autopilot by jiggling the mouse button when you're closing a dialog!) and it will happily allow you to try and walk to prims in your own HUD!

This is because they perform the double-click detection by faking out the right-click-menu code.

It's really complicated and nasty code.

The autopilot on object sit was cute but it's basically gone now. The avatar leasps now, even with no sit target. There is still a vestige there for ground sits. I guess the latest behavior does have a small advantage in that it actually works, but the old way was more interesting.
