I want to write books and sell them in SL. Provide the SL world with literature. I just don't know how to make books. I can make a notecard, but I don't want to pass out notes, I want to sell books. If I can figure out how to write books, I'll open a book store and sell my stories. Please help.

This, my friend, is my own holy grail. The problem lies in a simple fact of life: most people do not like to sit and read at their PC, especially if they're in an immersive world such as SL.

You have two real options: presenting the book as an object or hud, which entails graphics that have to res. This is problematic for a number of obvious reasons. The other is the use of notecards - but one solution may be had in books that "read" to you; reciting the text in private or open chat. This makes for much easier reading than graphics or notecards, especially if the reader can adjust the speed of the text.

This will require some scripting, of course. Theres any number of folks who will work for a reasonable fee, perhaps creating a generic "book" which you can customize with graphics and text for each new book you want to offer to the public.

Notecard versions are not necessarily bad. I bought a few stories that were on notecards, copied/pasted them to Word docs, printed them out, and read them like I would a regular book at home.

Once someone's copied and pasted your book onto 'Word', they can change it a little and publish it themselves as 'their' book. I know it's breaking copyright but you might never know about it.

Having said that, I've thought about doing a notecard story or two - not for big bucks, - just for fun!

Check out Cookie Island also and the groups P.S., Written Word and Inksters. There's a very lively literary community in SL and something is always going on, including book fairs, readings, and discussion groups.

ANON Literary Magazine also publishes original works. IM me in world and I'll give you the contact name for the ANON editors.

So true - I have a tendency to sometimes forget about the crooks out there.

I suppose if I were a writer and thought about publishing anything via notecard, I would make sure I had file the copyrights on the work first, just in case someone else tried to claim it was theirs.
