Profile Picks: Who Counts and Who Doesnt?

I recall in one particularly-heated thread here on this forum recently involving traffic bots and search, someone raised the point that you can use Profile Picks to aid you with Search ranking by adding a business to your Profile Picks. Then someone else said that only certain picks "count". Can someone explain this? Who counts and who doesn't... or is it a secret? I won't tell!

I *think* that what you heard might be referring to the "pay for Picks" (also known as "Picks Camping";) schemes. You sign up at a store, and add it to your Picks. After about a week, you start to collect L$ from that store, and continue to collect as long as the store stays in your Picks.

Not all stores offer Picks Camping. And even when you sign up, it doesn't pay out for a while. So, maybe that is what they meant by "only some Picks count".

I think it's only picks in profiles of people with either payment info used or payment info on file. I'm pretty certain NPIOF (no payment info on file) picks don't help with search rankings.

I'd have to spend some time digging to try and find it, but I believe that someone tested and verified that any avatar, payment info on file or not, that's spent L$ to LL (such as paying to found a group) counts.

I dont know what the actual answer is.. I just know LLs response was at best...flaccid.

That's a very good way to put it, and now I know why we still haven't seen the promised blog entry...

...the Lindens are still waiting for their shipment of Lie-agra to come in to firm up their flaccid reasoning.

If a profile has 2 pages in search they should count in picks. So search for a name and if you see only:

Resident profile: Avatar Name

Then the belief is the picks don't count.

If you see:

Resident profile: Avatar Name and then another link of Avatar Name, those picks should count.

They don't need to be payment info on file but they do need to do something to show their active.

The only avs that count are those with HTML pages. NPIOF avs need to do something to force an HTML page, such as starting a group. The group page shows the creator's name as a link to his/her page.

I did extensive testing on this with my Puppet Army. For avatars to 'count', they must:
1. Have Payment Info on file - you can do this by purchasing $1 USD in Lindens on the LindeX (with a small transaction fee).
OR
If you are a NPIOF account, you must create a group (L$100 fee).

2. Have been logged in to SL within the past 30 days.

Does the group-creation trick continue to work, if the group is abandonned?

Perhaps participating in jira or some linden in-world discussion will accomplish this, as I've seen search results for those.

I always count - some folks just haven't figured that out yet.

I might just have to pee on trees and fire hydrants like a regular doggie! But rest assured, if I spot adfarms after that date, they will certainly get special treatment. ;)

Thank you for this very informative thread. Does anyone know if NPIOFs owning land get listed in search with a HTML page?
