Back when I played WoW I met a couple who used it to hang out together. He had to travel on business a lot and she was at home, but they could get on WoW, talk to each other, and have a good ol' time killing orcs together. Seems to me SL would be a much better place for RL couples separated by distance to do that - with voice chat enabled, a long-distance telephone call with Benefits. Yet I never hear of it.
Anybody actually do this? I think some, perhaps many, must. How does that work out for them? Any advice for others? War stories?
(Oh, and any who go in for long-distance threesomes and beyond?)

Yeap! That's exactly what my RL & I do, they live 3 hrs away and visit on weekends, holidays, when they had surgery, etc. Hence how they got sucked into SL, pain pills and nothing to do, watching me be here, decided to visit too. Before we just use to talk on the phn, IM and email, see ea other irl. I'm on my 2nd rez day, their almost on their 1st, and they are still like Jack from NBC! "What's this! What's this!" To my surprise, they love SL. Lots of funny observations to watch them go through hehehe! They never got involved w/ any real inet communities before and considered it all not real, while I'm a big net addict, always have been, so that's been fun and not, them realizing "Hey these are real ppls not just IPs!" and how a person could actually live here.

I know a couple that does meet up here - one of the Hangout semi-regulars. Her fiance travles a lot so they meet here for some online time together. And I think it is a really neat idea.

Absolutely!
During the week, my husband is 3-400 miles away, working. When we can afford it (which is most weekends now, thankfully!) he drives home on the weekend. For most of last year, that wasn't often.
When I first encountered SL last year, one of my first thoughts was that it might be a way for us to spend time together during the week. I'll never forget one of our first evenings in-world together - we just sat at a picnic table, TOGETHER, and talked. In real time. It blew both of us away just a little.
We don't voice chat (I just don't. Period. I don't even like to answer the RL phone.) but SL gives us a chance to catch up on each others' days, go dancing, just spend time together. Without running up the phone bill... lol I just wish the kids could spend time with him the same way.
It works out pretty well for us. Then again, my dad was career military, so I grew up with occasional family separations, and my folks set a great example.
Advice and war stories... hmm... really, anything I could say would be the good ol' trite advice about dealing with separation. Communicate. Be good to each other. Don't think SL is going to solve all the difficulty of being apart. Maybe make friends as a couple, or look for others in a similar situation?
Not really sure I've been very helpful there. But yes, at least some RL couples meet up in SL to deal with RL separation.

You know, I've thought about this. My husband travels periodically and it seems a good way to be able to spend time together in the evenings. One of the reasons I came inworld was because I was bored when he was gone. But then I think to myself "geez, he's going to wonder why I have that sex bed already" or; "what if someone spills the beans about me and my ex?" or; how can I explain how I'm so damn knowledgeable about things he already has suspicions about?" or even worse..."what if HE gets involved with someone when I'm not around?" Ugh! Then my better sense gets hold of me. I figure I'm better off keeping this world to myself

I know a few people who are RL couples who meet inworld. I think it's a nice idea. I suppose it depends what each person is here for.

My wife Sansarya and I play both WoW and SL together... but we don't kill Orcs in WoW. We ARE Orcs and we kill humans. Gnomes, dwarves, Night Elves, and Draenei as well. But we don't use either of them to connect from a long distance, unless you consider 10 feet a long distance... that's how far it is from her computer to mine. I couldn't really stand to be much further apart than that. <3 P2

I guess, too, people who were SL long distance and have met and decided to go for it, then have the hassles of immigration to deal with fall under this category.

Dearly Darlings,
Several of my RL family now have avatars here. Me and my husband, three sisters and husbands, a niece, a nephew and his wife, best friend and her husband, three cousins and a nice cat we adopted into the family from Arizona.
We play trivia together and hang out quite a bit. It's a very nice, inexpensive way to spend time together as a family.
You all have a lovely afternoon.
Ever Yours,
Mrs. Showdog Tiger

My wife and I are both on SL most evenings, though we work at different places in world. We do use SL to stay in touch when my RL job takes me out of town. We also keep in touch with our daughter via SL. She moved cross-country last year to be close to her now fiancé.

My fiancee sits beside me, using the laptop, while I'm on my Desktop using SL. As sweet as it sounds, it usually goes like this: Me (pointing to screen all excited): "Hey! Check this out! Look what I found!" Her: "Uh-Huh. Thats neat." (1 hour more of the same) Me (pointing to screen all excited): "Ooooo! Look at that!" Her: "Jesus Christ!!! Would you shut up!!! I'm playing Neopets!!" Then follows several looooong minutes of apologizing, followed by an hour or two of ****Censored*****

Of course it is something like at that... or at least borrowing out his credit card so his fiancee can do a decent shoppings for clothes.... To subject, at times I have to leave home for my work some days. Long distance calls become expensive quickly. So at first we always chatted on MSN. But now with my new notebook and a lot of hotels offering Internet-connections on the rooms nowadays (I check on that ) we meet in SL. So much more nicer. Morwen.
