Hello
I have bought a new monitor LG Flatron W2234S , I am having VGA port in it and I am thinking to use my graphics card DVI-I port to convert it to VGA and use this monitor .
Can any one tell me that I can have better image quality ? or there would not be any difference ??
also I am trying to see HD movies over this monitor but I have max resolution of 1680x1050
can I have the advantage of HD over this resolution and can enjoy HD quality ??
Please any one who has any experience regarding my question so please do reply me
Thanks

DVI ports (usually) output both DVIA (analog) and DVID (digital) signals, using different signal lines on the same connectors.

The analog signals are the usual R,G,B around the little "plus" adapter on the DVI connector, with sync signals mixed in on the other pins. The R,G,B digital is on the other pins also, usually transmitted via twisted pair, and very sensitive to clocking and timing. This is why digital DVI cables are never much more than 10 or 12 feet long.

By far the best image is going to be via DVID, which is purely digital and delivered from relatively slow speeds (VGA~indistinguishable) to very fast (2 to 6 GHz, ultra high resolution).

For HD movies, I forgot the spec but it may not matter much what you use. Regular TV is only about 5MHz bandwidth, HD is a bit more than that but not a lot more. VGA and DVI Analog is in the 100's of MHz range and DVI Digital is in the GHz range, at the top end.

You will never see HD pictures on 1680x1050 monitor - You need 1920 x 1080.
anything else is down scaling. ( or up scaling above 1920)
Regards.

If by HD movies you mean this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDTV

...it depends what you are trying to see.

Relevant quotes from wiki:

"The lossy compression that is used in all digital HDTV storage and transmission systems will distort the received picture, when compared to the uncompressed source."

Basically that means you are going to have a degraded image almost no matter what you do, but, it's still pretty darn good. Image scaling from native resolution to any other, is going to cause degradation too.

"Non-cinematic HDTV video recordings intended for broadcast are typically recorded either in 720p or 1080i format as determined by the broadcaster. 720p is commonly used for Internet distribution of high-definition video, because all computer monitors operate in progressive-scan mode. 720p also imposes less strenuous storage and decoding requirements compared to both 1080i and 1080p. 1080p is usually used for Blu-ray Disc."

...so basically it depends on your source. If the image is a movie, i.e. moving around a lot, you won't notice much difference at all, even with huge amounts of image compression. If you are trying to look at static text though (like the text of this post) you'll notice image compression quickly and immediately.

Same image either way.

You need 1920 pixels by 1080 fo HD - no way around that.

DVI to VGA is always either the same image (DVI Analog is VGA) or worse.

DVI Digital is way better than VGA, and converting back to analog just degrades the data.

It's also a question of "better than what?".

If your choice is between using the DIV-I port on the graphics card, with a DVI-I to VGA adapter, *OR* using the built-in VGA port on your motherboard and a straight VGA cable, than I would bet that any graphics card that has DVI ports as its sole choice of output will do a far superior job as compared to the integrated on-the-motherboard VGA port.

But if the choice is using a DVI-I to VGA adapter and a VGA cable to connect to the DVI port on the graphics card, or connecting just a VGA cable to a VGA port on the SAME graphics card, there would be either no difference, or possibly the straight VGA cable option may even be a bit better than taking the DVI output and using an adapter to make it VGA.

Finally, if the monitor itself offers a choice between DVI-Analog and VGA connectors, the A DVI-I conecting cable plugged into the DVI-A port should do better than anything plugged into the VGA port.

The LG Flatron W2234S apparently only has a 15 pin d-sub connector (VGA).

Checking the specs of this monitor, it doesn't include an HDMI interface either, just the VGA, I checked because some panel makers seem to be dropping the DVI connections in favor of HDMI, and a DVI-D/HDMI adapter can send the digital signals with no quality loss. Unfortunately in this case, no such luck.
