Question about setting home location for roommates

I currently "own" a parcel of land that I rent from a group... I have set the location to be my home. The only problem is I have roommates who I share my house, land, and rent with and they would also like to set the location as their home, but it gives them a message something like "must be a mainland location to set home"... is there anyway to allow them to set their homes here also?

Thanks

Set Home is a group permission. Your roommates will need to be in the land group too

Thanks, the group I am renting from (they are already part of this group) or should I create a group for the land? Then what?

Should be the group you are renting from. I think.

It will be the group that owns the land.

The group has to be the one to which the land is set (or, if the land is group-owned, it has to be that group), and the group Members must be assigned to a Role in the group that has the Ability: "Allow 'Set Home to Here' on group land."

That's all controlled from the Group Information window (Edit / Group / select group-> Info), Members & Roles tab. By default, I believe the Everyone role has that Ability.

If the roommates are in such a role, they should be able to just do World / Set Home to Here when they're on the parcel.

Lol, getting more confusing... I "own" the land (my name is on it, I can change, edit, and set things for the land), but I don't have a premium membership so I rent it from a group... so it's kinda both... I guess I can try to make a group myself and see if that works... cause the group I rent/own it from doesn't work for them to set their homes there...

Creating a group won't help unless you can set (or deed) the land to that group. Many Estates allow you to do either of those (because the Estate owner can just undo it when your lease expires). On a rented Mainland parcel, the landowner will want to have complete control over any landowning group (because that group really and truly owns the land), but they can invite other members in other non-owner roles to such a group.

What you need to do is contact the owner of the land (the person that runs the group you need to have active when you rez things on the land) and ask them to check that your roommates have been assigned a group role that allows Set Home to Here. As Qie said, by default that should be everybody that joins the group, but it's possible that the land owner has changed this so that only specific tenant roles (such as yours) have that ability.

It sounds like this is land on a private estate. I won't get into the own/rent semantic debate other than to point out that it's confusing things here. For the purposes of your question, the key is who does the About Land dialog say is the owner (on the General tab).

If it says you, presumably there will be no group list. You'll need to create your own group, and assign it to the land. I'm not sure if the land has to be deeded to the group if the only thing you want to give out is the ability to set home. You'll also want to make sure that the other members in the group have the Set Home ability set.

If it says group owned, then they'll have to be members of the group, and again, they'll need the Set Home ability.

It's my understanding "set home to here" can only be performed by the land's owner as shown in "About Land." So if that shows your name, nobody can do it but you, even if they're a member of a group that it's "set to" (this acts differently than setting an object to a group).

Therefore, if you want multiple people to set their home location to that property, there is only one solution.

Create a group, or choose an existing group that only yourself and your chosen roommates are members of. Deed the land to that group so that the group in question is now listed as the land's owner. Ensure that all group members have the ability to set their home location to the group's land checked on.

Then they can all do it.

It worked that way for a long time, but that was a bug (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-404), fixed about a year ago. Now land merely Set to group allows members to set their home locations there.

Ok, well, it worked and we have all set our home location :)

I created a group, invited my roommates, set (not deeded) the group to the land... and it works, yea! (By the way, it is on an Estate, and I am the land owner.)

Thanks everyone!
