I installed the Dale Glass viewer and the installation routine said it couldn't find llkdu.dll on my system.

I've got a dozen llkdu.dlls on my system. There shouldn't be any problem finding one.

I copied one into the Dale Glass \ Second Life folder and some sub-folders and reran the install file and it still said it couldn't find llkdu.dll.

It runs, but based on the fact that nearly everything is gray, even more than the other SL viewers, if you can imagine such a degree of grayness, I assume its using the slower redistributable llkdu.dll substitute.

What do you have to do to help Dale Glass's viewer to find llkdu.dll? Hold the dll up to the viewer's face and rub it in its eyes? Tape it to the viewer's bathroom mirror? Set the dll in the viewer's favorite chair?

dont use the llkdu.dll, use the openjpeg.dll instead.
i find that the renderiing of textures is slightly better using openjpeg.dll.
it should be included in the installation routine.
if the viewer persists on not operating without llkdu.dll, you will need an older version for the viewer to render texture properly.
copying the llkdu.dll from a newer viewer will not work.
you will need llkdu.dll from a viewer version 1.18.4.
on my DG installation, i am not using llkdu.dll, im using a much newer version of openjpeg.dll to render textures.
as a warning, on the DG viewer, the camera accuracy to the mouse pointer is off center and gets worse the further you move away from the center of the screen.
dont use DG to play games like zyngo or to build/move objects.
you will find great difficulty in doing so.

With the irksome deficiencies like the ones described above, why would anyone want to use that viewer?

3D, it makes for a fun trip through SL.

Although, I see no reason that patch couldn't be applied to any viewer.

Gosh...the last I heard from Dale was he wanted to move with Luskwood to Openlife but they can not deliver. Is he still making viewers? ;)

There are a number of kdu libs around that are different. You likely tried a later version. Check out some older builds. Not sure on what version the DG viewer was built, but you should get the same from LL and pull out the llkdu.lib and throw it into your SL directory. It should be recognized automatically if in the correct version.

I was inspired to reinstall the Dale Glass viewer because it was mentioned that the Avatar list shows Lindens.

Within minutes of logging in I had Linden staff showing in the Avatar list. Scott Linden, to be precise.

However, the view was nearly all gray, and, while Linden staff can be invisible, and hide from sensors and such, they aren't always. So I don't know if it was showing anything special.

It was too gray to stick around and investigate at all.

Given that the viewer picks up agents for rendering and does not use sensor LSL functions, it's only reasonable to assume that Lindens are being picked up. After all, they are visible and names are sent to the client for tagging on the screen, even though they are transparent to in-world sensors.

Out of curiosity: Where did you run into a Linden "within minutes"? I can't imagine that Scott was leering through the window of your skybox. :o

Hippo is a fork of Cool Viewer based on some older code. You could also just use an up to date CV :)

I don't know that there is an up to date Dale Glass viewer, unless someone other than Dale makes it.

Thanks for the PM, Boy. It did seem to work.

I've tried Cool Viewer, both the regular viewer and RC versions, the Nicholaz viewer, Imprudence, Hippo Viewer, Kirsten's RC16. I even tried the Shadow Draft viewer, though that was a waste of time with my old x800. Lately, for the past month or two, I'd say, grayness and unformed sculpties abound, on all of the viewers.

I should break down and spend money on the system. A power supply, an 8800, and 4 gigs of ram would probably make things better.

I wasn't however trying the Dale Glass viewer for any performance issues, it was solely to see the Linden names in the Avatar list. If you could see the Lindens that are supposed to be hidden, you could say hi to them, or maybe go Boo! and scare them. But that old openjpeg dll must have been pretty sad.

Boy Lane; Have you seen this yet?

http://code.google.com/p/par/

There are some pretty nice functions there that would be great built into a viewer. Some is of questionable value, but the instant full sim radar that works to MAX_INT, long range say and ability to get the URL of OBJECTS that IM are pretty nice. Especially if the capability was built in to output the radar data on a channel of choice so that a hud could read it like they are doing.

@Suezanne

I had an X800 before. Constant problems and crashes. After talking with Henri about this I did what he suggested and got myself a Nvidia 8600GT. Never looked back since. You can get one for almost free these days. But I'd suggest a 9800 (relabeled 8800) to buy today. Pretty good value for money and they continue to make it under different names (GTS240).

@Jesse

I've seen that and tried it before. Someone posted this a while ago in SLU and there was also someone who knew the creator. Have to check again.

I was going to take a look at Dale's AV scanner if I have some time. Besides some smaller changes we keep CV on Henri's patch level to be the same for Linux, Windows and Mac. Might be some nice addition tho. But have to convince the "boss" and honestly Henri is way better in hacking viewers than myself ;)

Hi!

The installer is looking for a very specific version of llkdu.dll, the same that was shipped with the version my viewer was based on. That is, if the viewer is based on .18, it will look specifically for the llkdu.dll that was shipped with that .18 viewer.

This is because LL has their own development, and I don't know when will they decide to release a viewer with a DLL that's incompatible with an older one. So in case it turns out that .20 has a .dll that would make the viewer crash, the installer is extra-careful and won't accept any versions except the exact one it expects.

If you want to ignore this requirement, simply copy a .dll into the installation folder of my viewer. It could work, or it could crash horribly. If nothing goes wrong then it's probably fine.

I've had a new viewer in planning for a long time now, but unfortunately kept getting busy with more urgent things. I seem to finally got most things out of the way though, so I expect to get back to the viewer at some point.

On Luskwood: There's no plan to *move* Luskwood anywhere. We are doing an experiment with setting up a second one on an alternate grid. The Luskwood on SL is not going anywhere AFAIK (though that's not for me to decide)

Dale's right. :) And sure, a bit off topic, but figured I'd put some rumors to rest:

- We're exploring becoming part of other grids, but at this point, as far as community needs and especially avatar creation needs (well, and, let's be frank here: even avatar wearing needs - attachments remaining attachments are a huge plus) -- a lot of these locations are not ready for primetime (yet!), and don't have much of an online population at this point.

We hope to be there when they do, but a full-on exodus isn't in the cards at the moment.

A real benefit of this is being able to come from 5+ years of community experience on SL, and being able to hopefully add input into viewer and server development from a community management perspective.

The experiment is ongoing, but our aim is to have a presence on the OpenSim grids. But like any early beta project, it's been a rocky start.

But, part of this *does* involve a renewed interest in client -and- server fixes, so I don't think Dale, nor his code, is going away anytime soon either. (Though that's not for me to decide, either :) )

There's a lot to be learned in both the viewer and server space as to "what could be done better" going forward.

Hopefully some of the experiences we've had can benefit the entire project as a whole, down the line. That's the intention, at least.
