I'm seeing a number of parcels suddenly appear as owned by the Gov, but they are not purple. Anyone know why?

LL used to give the surrounding residents the opportunity to pick up abandoned parcels in their sim (something they are still doing for abandoned 16 meter squares. You can put in a ticket for the property and see what they say.

I don't want any of the parcels - they are in neighoring sims. I'm curious because, until those, the land I've seen that was picked up by the Gov has gone to purple immediately - at least as far as I know. When watching for land coming up for sale, I never checked red land. Maybe it's exactly what you said, and they'll turn purple soon.

Maybe they are freshly abandoned.

It can take up to 60 days for a parcel to be recycled thu the auctions. If you own 3 of the adjoining sides you can drop a support ticket and ask if you can buy it or if its large they may be able to push it into the auction queue and you can bid on it. As a courtesy they can sell it to you pretty cheap. As for why it became Gov Lindens it could be any number of reasons such as the person abandoned it, or they were banned from SL or they couldn't pay the tier for it.

That reminded me...

In the parcels' descriptions it states some info which I haven't seen before:-

From: someone
Land abandoned by <avatar name> on 08-Nov-2008
The date is different on each parcel, of course. And the parcel title's are "Abandoned Land" - also something I've never seen before.

It looks different to me.

I've found that they started labeling abandoned parcels with the avatar and the date of abandonment. I'm assuming it's so they have a better idea of turn around time OR so they can see how long it takes for one of us to bug 'em about putting it up for auction.

I can't see it being either of those. For the first one they have the acquistition date already and, since the land isn't for sale, it isn't going to be sold until they do something with it. The second one is highly unlikely - I don't see any reason for them to want that information.

I'm thinking it may be a change to the way they deal with recovered land. I don't know if it was taken manually before, but it looks automated now. And the reason it isn't purple could be so that people aren't watching the auction every day to see when it gets there. It would be much better if the land turned purple as it hits the auction, or a day or two before it hits. I believe there is a delay between a parcel being recovered and it being listed for auction. Maybe the color will change when it gets listed.

Maybe its recent them :)

I've bought purple land direct from LL and via the auction, not long ago, and I haven't seen that info in the titles and descriptions. Maybe it changed and these are the first plots that I've seen like them.

Huh, something occurred to me: I once recall seeing a "sex club" abandoned and it still had all it's information in all it's non-PG glory. Maybe this automated system is to remove such descriptions and land titles? The information they put in there isn't hard to get ahold of, so why not just use it as a place holder.

The not turning purple thing has been that way for ages. I don't think it turns purple until the parcel actually gets an auction ID assigned. I've seen the "abandoned by" info for a while, too, but I can't honestly say when I first saw it. (I do remember that, at the time, I thought the previous owner had put that info in manually, to track some kind of private experiment. But I have a better tinfoil hat now. )

Of course not all land that falls to the Governor is actually abandoned; some is reclaimed for lack of tier payment or membership cancellation. So maybe that's why some parcels didn't (and still don't?) get that info.

I'd speculate that they may be trying to improve the whole Abandonment process; in the past, these parcels would routinely fill with drift prims for want of reasonable parcel settings. Maybe now they're fixing the settings at Abandon time.

Abandoned land owned by Gov Linden is the same color as Linden protected land - red. If it gets put into auction or set for sale, than it changes color accordingly.

I first saw the "Abandoned by [avatar name] on [date]" near the end of September.

I'd guess your speculations on the change being related to fixing the settings to prevent the build-up of trash, etc., to be correct. No doubt it's purely functional.

All the same, the effect of seeing the person's name is rather poignant---crushed dreams and all that sort of thing.

They may have changed the colour, to make it less obvious. Having a mass of purple on the map, wouldn't instill too much confidence in the SL population.
With the amount of very, very cheap land currently for sale, quite a few people find it more cost effective to abandon land, rather than sell it.

Also a lot of reclaimed and abandoned mainland is not put up immediately for resale. LL managing the supply of this now. There are two parcels next to mine in two different sims owned by Governor Linden that have been this way for over a year. Over two years in one case.

One parcel was full of junk because autoreturn not set. So I AR the Governor herself and the garbos came and cleaned it up the next day. We can AR the Governor anytime we find a Linden parcel anywhere not set to autoreturn, except for vehicle rez parcels next to roadside/waterways of course. Or has banlines up. Is one of them on a sim I just moved my homeplace to. I give it a few days and if is still the same then I AR the Governor again.

The garbos quite pleased when we do this I think because they want to clean up the place as much as we do. Is lots of little parcels all over that need tidying up as they probably got missed way back when everything was done manually.

One of the Gov's parcels (a 1024) has a 512 next to it that is owned by the person who abandoned the 1024, so I guess that wasn't so much a crushed dream as a financial decision with the tier date upon him.

I picked up a couple of abandoned 16m lots from the Gov'nor recently, which are no safely incorporated in my land. But what never ceases to surprise me is the land that doesn't get abandoned, like another two 16m lots that have been for sale for L$5000 each for well over a year!

I abandoned a small 48sq m. strip of land in another sim for fun. I needed to get rid of it to reduce tier, so rather than sell it rock-bottom for some bot to pick up on behalf of an ad cutter, I abandoned it, meaning it would remain empty for at least a while.

That has been a trend by users that snatch up ad farm land and abandon it right after purchase so it gets dumped into the recycle system and is unavailable for an ad farmer to acquire quickly. Kinda like their name immortalized....well for up to 2 months or so.

Well, sure, it's not good to be overly sentimental about these things: in some sizable percentage, it's merely a hard-headed business decision.

But probably some are crushed dreams. ^_^

This generated a mental picture of a bunch of avatars dressed as Queen Christina and Ninotchka and Anna Karenina, wielding litter sticks.

Too bad that's not the case.......:(

Noojoo, much more than 2 months. In fact, there's ad land that I've abandoned a year ago and it still Linden land. Back when Linden make the change to auto rename the abandoned plot to "abandoned by .....", I started deeding the ad farm plots to a group called "Donated for Public Park" before abandoning them :)
