Hiya all,

Apologies for the rather unimaginative title...lol

When renting out a property, how exactly does one give the renter access to certain features of the house such as 'tintable' windows, or other objects such as a tv etc. I imagined it would be a matter of setting the windows to the rental group but this doesn't seem to work for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks

Just a curious question, Have you adjusted the permissions the roles are entitled to within the group?

I would think that the script would have to be done in such a way that it would be group useable only (like a lot of model stands, camp chairs etc are done)

then of course set those windows (or whatever object) to group and then the person in the group needs to activate their tag, and voilĂ !

or have the script coded so that you can add folks to an access list

I suppose it depends on the scripts. All my tinted windows check llSameGroup() which requires that the operator have right group active. But then, I don't sell them... if I did, I'd probably have a config notecard that set them to operate for all, for group, or for owner only, or something like that.

TVs are a whole different problem; land radios, too. These have to have a scripted object on the parcel owned by whomever owns the parcel, so if they're supposed to control parcel media and audio settings on group-deeded land, that part has to be group-deeded, too.

Pocket,

One easy answer to this is: You don't have to. I use blinds, and not tints, and there are no permissions whatsoever. They're basically just like RL blinds. Yes, it's easy to bypass the walls with the cam and mess with them, but in 1 year of renting I've never had a single incident or complaint. In SL you can bypass the walls and door locks and sit on people's furniture anyway, so I don't think the blinds are even worth worrying about.

And never apologize for a perfectly descriptive title that allows people at a glance to know what your question is!! ;-)

Thanks so much for the replies .....

All of this has really come about because I have a 2048 plot that's doing nothing so I've put up a house etc and was thinking of renting it out. I've tried it with an alt and despite setting the windows and I think the entire house to the group, my alt can't change the windows.

What permissions should I give a 'renter' role within the group? I've never dealt with this kind of thing before so I'm not too sure how it should be done. I certainly appreciate all your help so far.. :)

You could replace the windows or just the window scripts with ones that allow control by nominated avatars.

Dare I use the hippo word?
You'd have all the scripts for door and window control on that basis from that stable.
Your only issue would be sourcing the window textures as you probably can't have the textures from the existing windows.

I use hippoWindows. But before I did, I used a texture-changing script and modified it to allow specific avatars to control the tint.
