Release Notes for Second Life 1.19.1(0) March 5th, 2008
=====================================
New features and changes:

* WindLight - Physically accurate atmospheric rendering and lighting
** Animateable day cycles
** Vastly improved realistic water with reflections and glimmer
** "Glow" as new object attribute
** Avatar Impostoring, which can speed up crowded scenes tremendously
** A new cleaned-up, easy to use Graphics Preferences tab with simple and advanced options for performance/quality settings

* Additional rendering optimizations:
** Faster, more reliable occlusion culling - occluded regions are discovered instantaneously, eliminating random bad frames due to the camera moving too quickly
** No geometry transform overhead on region crossing - results in region crossings being slightly smoother
** Faster frustum culling - less time is spent determining what's visible, thus giving better overall framerates
** No copy-to-texture for ripple water - objects under water are rendered to texture at half resolution, resulting in better overall framerates
** Faster sky updates - the non-WindLight (aka no-shader) skies update quicker - even faster than the pre-WindLight skies!
** Single pass shiny when using shaders - making an object shiny will no longer require it to be rendered twice, which results in virtually free shiny functionality from a performance standpoint
** Single pass terrain when using shaders - the terrain is no longer drawn in two passes, which, from a performance standpoint, results in virtually free high detail terrain for shader friendly cards (See the System Recommendations at http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php)
** Improved object update code (less work for the CPU) - attachments are no longer added to the active list, which improves performance in crowded areas
** Better scheduling of Avatar LOD (Level of Detail) updates - Avatar LOD is now calculated every 16 frames as opposed to every single frame, which removes redundant work
** Better Avatar culling through more accurate bounding boxes - Avatar bounding boxes now match their current animation, resulting in more optimized culling of avatars that are not visible in the frame
** Better tree rendering (70% fewer matrix operations, no reliance on GL matrix stack) - results in improved performance for tree rendering
** Trimmed unused state in LLDrawable, LLSpatialGroup, LLOctree, and LLFace - results in memory savings
** 16-bit index buffers are now used instead of 32-bit buffers - improves memory bandwidth for rendering geometry
** For more information, see: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/WindLight
** Known Issue:
*** VWR-1749: Second Life viewer client freezes on MacBook Pro

* Parcel Media - adds the ability to display Web based media on a parcel
** New API for Media Rendering
** Enables Web content inworld
** Added two new click actions, one for playing movies, and one for opening media
** Embedded web browser
** Added support for Media resizing

* Estate-Level Abuse Reporting
** Estate owners and managers now have the ability (under World > Region/Estate) to enter an email address where abuse reports will be sent.
** If this address is empty, abuse reports will go to Linden Lab as usual. If the address is present, the abuse reports will be sent there instead. In both cases, all abuse reports are logged by Linden Lab.

* Voice changes
** Changed the default voice volume to be a bit higher, to better match the volume of in-world sounds
** Changed the voice volume slider to default to the middle of its range, so voice volume can be boosted above the default

* Improved Linux Voice support
** Better support for USB headsets and other devices
** Better voice audio quality

Fixes:
* VWR-434: HUD textures are attaching but not being seen
* bumpmapping flips on active objects
* Fixed various Teleport and Show on Map bugs
* VWR-2030: Avatar only turns half-way in Appearance Mode
* VWR-2920: Sculptie LOD causes object to be deformed into a flattened sphere close while correct far
* VWR-2164: Particle Alpha transition is done incorrectly
* VWR-1609: disabling "Show Selection Beam" makes beam render incorrectly for others
* VWR-2834: Builds fail on 1.18.4.0 with no mozlib
* More Help Buttons in Graphics Preferences
* VWR-983: Particles -> Offscreen/hidden particles get extended life -> as of 1.16.x at least.
* (Linux) Working device enumeration A.K.A. USB headset support
* Linux Voice quality issues in 1.19.0
* VWR-4921: not recognising in Linux that client is already running
* Change the way local output volume is handled
* Checkboxes in About Land untick when selected
* Add missing header file to export list for public SVN repository
* Copy To Inventory fail to execute without any output feedback when Notecard has changes but not saved
* Resolve instant message crash report
* Textures/Snapshots in a notecard are opened again when you click copy to inventory.
* VWR-882: Group name showing as (???) in About Land, IM tabs, and object edit window
* Packet-loss while viewing inventory currently results in perceived inventory loss
* stop and pause Media and music buttons do not work
* Displayed page in the client browser disappears when crossing property boundaries.
* replace misspellings in alerts.xml parameters (<message name="messsage";) (3 S's)
* fix a misspelling of 'participants' in floater_chat_history.xml tool tip
* clean up some viewer text strings related to Windlight features
* Media browser history dropdown does not save items across sessions
* XML CLEANUP: duplicate sibling names in en-us xml
* Crash in LLTabContainer::draw() if selected tab is invalid
* The Search floater does not enable the "Search" button until the user has typed 3 characters to reduce db load
* truncated english word 'water' in Advanced Water Editor modal help dialog
* sculpties on the top10 crash list
* WindLight: Default water has repetitive, scale-like patterns
* Fix MacBook Air/Intel 3100 WindLight issues
* VWR-4548: Linux Intel945 feature-blacklist not being applied (Unresponsive, blackscreen, if not using LL_GL_NOEXT=x)

I hadn't even noticed mention of windlight - it's the parcel media changes that got my attention.

This is for the Release Candidate, which is not the regular viewer, but is a test version that is slated to become the regular viewer once it has been tested, debugged and revised sufficiently.

You are right about the Windlight thing, I haven't had time to read it yet. Just got it running.

HTML on a prim (sort of) and in-client Web Browswer
03-06-2008 18:12
I wish I had some land to test the parcel media newness on.

Also we can use the in-client web browser at last!

You can open the in-client web browser, browse till you find an url you like, then send the url to the parcel - so other's will see it.

This sounds like it might be pretty cool.

Not official client yet, only RC. And yes it's in RC any surprise there? They Mirrored 1.19.0 so closely for bug fixes in WindLight. In fact some may have noticed mention of the 1.19.0 and Windlight merging in RC which did not come to pass so now it's an RC on it's own. Don't want a faster graphics engine that should run better on all machine if everyone reports their bugs? TOUGH!

Sorry, just tired of beta software hysteria.

While I'm glad that HTML on a prim is finally here, at least to some degree, I'm very disappointed that they chose to hack it in through the parcel media settings, rather than making it a per-texture thing, which was what they promised it would be (how many years ago?). We can only hope that this is just the first step, and that the per-texture version is still part of the plan. Otherwise, while it's a definite step up from just Quicktime, which is good, it's pretty much useless for what most of us had had in mind for it.

I've been playing with various URLs. The image it shows is not clickable so you can surf the web. Plus it puts a scroll bar to the right which doesn't work either. I did notice on one page that it showed small Xs where the pictures should have been, then the pictures loaded after that. So that was interesting.

ETA: It's of coarse not showing Flash or embedded movies. No plug-ins.

Hugsy whipped up a script to let me the url the parcel was displaying.

Here's a 4 Panel cartoon i found on google images, copied the url of, a I pasted "/1 http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20050113" and the script displayed the cartoon.

I picked a 4 panel cartoon so it would hopefully display one panel on each face.

So - when you want to show a new user something in the Second Life Wiki - you can show them , and everyone else around - if our avatar had decent pointing ability we could point to something.

I think this may be the biggest change in SL since, the lindens convertable into real dollars economy.

So, if you have your inworld web browser open, then a parcel owner can use a script to set the parcel media url, and you can't see it clearly enough, the media screen object can be scripted to do an llLoadUrl which will cause it to display on your web browser.

If they create a "Allow Web Browser Url Permission" for an object, you'd be see the url's display anywhere on your web browser.

I don't know if it allows sounds other that what the quicktime viewer does.

I am assuming this is the umm, the ubrowser, the same mozilla browser that we've been using in various places in the client.

I have copied the new page of the Knowledge Base on RC 1.19.1's new parcel media functions into the land wiki at land-answers.wiki.zoho.com at http://land-answers.wiki.zoho.com/RC-1-19-1-Parcel-Media---web-content-on-a-prim.html

From: someone

Release Candidate 1.19.1 Parcel Media - now with web content on a prim

Media on a parcel

The media on a parcel feature allows landowners to select and display a wide range of web-based media content, including web pages, movies, images, text documents and audio. This feature replaces and expands the existing Quicktime parcel media feature, giving you more flexibility in your media presentations. Currently, the displayed media is entirely non-interactive, meaning you will not be able to click web links, use scroll bars, or press buttons on web pages displayed on parcels.

Trivia: The Second Life viewer uses a modified version of the Mozilla web browser to connect directly to web content. As a result, the web pages you see can potentially differ from what other Residents see depending on locally stored cookies and authentication information on your computer.
The About Land Window

The Media tab of the About Land window contains many options for displaying media on your land in Second Life. To access the About Land window for a parcel of land, right-click the ground and select About Land. You must own the parcel, or have sufficient group abilities on a group-owned parcel in order to modify the land's media settings.

* Media Type: When you enter a Media URL, Second Life will try to automatically determine its Media Type. This drop-down list allows you to override the media you would like to play on your land. You should use this option if the Media Type is set incorrectly, or set to No Content. The text to the right of this dropdown box displays the media's MIME type.
* Media URL: This is the URL of the media you would like to show on your parcel. For example, http://wiki.secondlife.com/ is the URL for Second Life's wiki documentation. You can set the Media URL by pressing the Set... button and entering the new URL into the popup window that appears.

* Replace Texture: Objects using this texture will display your movie or web page after you click the Play arrow. To change the texture, click the box containing the texture.
* Media Options
o Auto scale: Checking this option will scale the content for this parcel automatically. It may be slightly slower and lower in visual quality, but no other texture scaling or alignment is required.
o Loop Media: Play media in a loop. When the media has finished playing, it will automatically start again from the beginning. This option is only available for video media types
o Hide Media URL: Checking this option will hide the Media URL from unauthorized viewers of this parcel's media information. This option is not available for HTML media types.
o Hide Music URL: Checking this option will hide the Music URL from unauthorized viewers of this parcel's media information.
o Media Size: Allows you to define the size of the displayed media, in pixels. This option is not available for video media.

The Tools Window

There are two media-related When Left-Clicked options available in the Tools window:

1. To access the Object Editor, right-click an object and select Edit.
2. Click the More >> button to expend the Object Editor.
3. Select an option from When Left-Clicked:
* Play parcel media: When the object is clicked, it will act as a "Play/Pause" button for the parcel's media stream. The same effect can be achieved by pressing the Play button in the lower-right corner of your Viewer.
* Open parcel media: When the object is clicked, your browser of choice will attempt to open the parcel media URL. Depending upon your Preferences, this can be the Viewer's Media Browser window, or an external web brower. This option will not work on a movie media type.

Trivia: These media types will always function as Play parcel media if the media is not already playing on your Second Life viewer.

The Preferences Window

The Web tab of the Preferences window allows you to choose your default media browser for Second Life:

* Use external web browser: If you select this option, all web hyperlinks in Second Life will open in your computer's default web browser (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer).
* Use built-in web browser: If you select this option, web hyperlinks in Second Life will open inside Second Life's media browser. Use this option to view web content without switching away from the Second Life viewer.
* Browser cache: Click the Clear Now button to clear the media browser's cache. This is not the same as clearing Second Life's cache!

The Audio & Video tab includes a checkbox to Automatically play media when available. If you check this box, media will automatically play when you enter a parcel with a media URL and media texture set.

The Media Browser Window

The media browser is a specialized Mozilla web browser you can use inside Second Life. It does many of the same things a normal web browser can do; type in a URL and press Go to navigate to a new web page. The Back and Forward buttons help you to navigate between previously-visited pages, and the Reload button refreshes your currently viewed media. The media browser also has a few buttons that are specific to Second Life:

* Send Current URL to Parcel: When pressed, this button replaces your current parcel media URL with the URL loaded in the media browser. You must own the land you are standing on, or have sufficient group abilities on group-owned land in order to use this button.
* Open in My Web Browser: Pressing this button opens the current media browser URL in your computer's default web browser (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari). You may wish to use this option if you wish to view web content that is not displaying properly inside Second Life.
* Always open in my web browser: If you check this box, web URLs will always open in your computer's default browser. You can reverse this setting on the Web tab of the Preferences window.

Tip: If you set Second Life to use the built-in browser, you can quickly open the media browser at any time by pressing the F1 key, which opens a link to the Support Portal.

This script will cycle the parcel through a list of urls to display when the prim it is in in touched.
From: someone
CODE

integer i = 0 ;

string urlstring = "http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com" ;

list urls = [ "suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com",
"suebaskerville.blogspot.com" ,
"www.rezzed.net/profile.php?user=SuezanneC%20Baskerville",
"my.mashable.com/suezannecbaskerville",
"asia.cnet.com/member/SuezanneCBaskervilleSuezanneCB/blog",
"http://del.icio.us/suezanne",
"profiles.slbuzz.com/suezannec-baskerville",
"http://suezanne.fateback.com/help/index-2.html"
] ;

default
{
state_entry()
{
// llSay(0, "Hello, Avatar!");
i = 0 ;
}

touch_start(integer total_number)
{

urlstring = llList2String( urls, i ) ;
llParcelMediaCommandList([PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_URL,urlstring,PARCEL_MEDIA_COMMAND_PLAY]);
//llLoadURL( llGetOwner(), "load ?", urlstring );
i ++ ;
i = i % llGetListLength( urls ) ;

}
}

You can stick a prim next to the screen to click on if you find a page you like, then it would read the parcel media url and llLoadUrl it into the inworld browser.

I was at Qarl's office hours this week. He acknowledges that one HTML page per land parcel is very limiting; there are plans to do more in the future, but he did not clarify exactly how it would be handled. He also said that Mozilla plugins are difficult to deal with (and thus not currently supported), so LL is looking at alternative web engines such as WebKit. Finally, he knows that people want interaction with web pages; LL is working on it, but he made no statements about when we might expect to get it.

My impression: the current version of HTML capability is only the beginning, not the end. LL wants people to get experience with using HTML content in-world, and find out what works well and what does not, and the feedback will be used to improve future versions. This is Qarl's second project aimed at improving the capabilities of SL (sculpties were the first); he seems to be on top of things, so I expect this to go in the right direction.

A bug that will probably be fixed soon...
03-08-2008 10:52
If someone accidentally sets llParcelMediaCommandList with one integer instead of two, it will crash the sim.

You can vote for a fix here:
