between working long hours and christmas i haven't logged on for a few days maybe a week, and when i come back my contact list is empty. could this be a glitch or are people that quick to forget? i'm not sure if i should be offended. i've only been a resident for around a month and these are people i thought i was getting along with.

If you mean your friends list, it does not load sometimes. Clear your cache and relauch. Your friends will be there.

I've had a lot of either Hippos or Waiting in my friend list lately too. A relog normally helps them load, but they do load eventually.

Also, many times when I log in, my account balance says "loading" but never loads. And I won't get my IMs and notices that were sent when I was offline. Clearing cache and relogging fixes those issues too.

If you click on a hippo or a waiting and click the 'can find me on the world map' it refreshes your friends list. Remember to find who it was you clicked as being able to see you on the map and unclick this permission once the list has loaded.
Also if your linden balance is stuck at 'loading' get a friend to pay you 1L that usually kick starts it.
