Can anyone explain what "must be rezzed out with the edit controls open" means for boxed item and how it is done?

Not wanting to be glib, but it's pretty self-explanatory. Before you rez the object, open your edit controls (the button that says "Build";) so that the entire object is automatically selected. Common with large objects made from multiple unlinked prims.

It means that the object is made of at least 2 parts that are unlinked, and that to keep them aligned you must press the Build button before dragging it out of inventory, so when you rez it the pieces are already selected.

Thanks. How do you take it back into inventory as one object?

So long as you have all the various parts higlighted, simply right click and click on Take, just like with any other object. The symbol for this type of object in your inventory is a cube that looks like it is made of smaller cubes, as opposed to the ordinary yellow cube.

Thanks, I needed that info but wasn't sure wha to ask. I'm working on a paddle wheeler, and it's to large to link it all. I have it set in 4 parts; the wheel is animated so it counts as 1. Didn't want to weld the wheel anyway. :)

waitwaitwait. you mean, if i select any two ... or n ... objects and then take them, they become a coalesced object, and will rez with the same relationship to each other that they had when i took them?

Experiment yourselves by just putting some random prims out and marking them all, then taking them in one go. When you rez them they will rez in the same place even. It's great if you're moving house to a simillar sized and shaped parcel as you can move and rez the entire house, furniture and all, in one fell swoop.

Yes. Even if one of them is No Modify. However, if part of it IS No Modify, then you can't rename the object.

Thanks. The item is an aquarium. 3 rotating objects inside the tank consisting of an invisible cylinder and a bunch of single prim fish attached to them. Because the fish and cylinder objects are inside the tank I cannot seem to select them. Is there a way to select them when I cannot click on them?

Only by moving the object surrounding them. Click it, move it to one side, then click the fish and arrange them, then move the tank object back again.

well, actually, i've been successful selecting fish inside my acquarium by moving the camera inside it. you know, put the camera on the outside glass, move in close, and rotate. it's tricky, tho, because they're all moving until you select them.

I tried that and it doesn't work. Kind of a pain to manipulate the aquarium tank back in. If it is not just right some of the fish swim out of the tank. :p

Oh well.

Tricky unless it's a very big aquarium. Also, only works if the tank object is hollow, which it doesn't have to be; it only needs to be transparent.

when you have finished moving the fish, go back to editing the tank, and go to edit, undo...

The tank should then jump back to where you moved it from

I learned this from Torley's video. Each prim has a memory of movements. So there *is* actually an undo button but it only works for each prim separately. Still its a very useful tool.

(if only it worked for textures)

love

Wouldn't you be able to select the fish and the aquarium by dragging a selection box that includes them all?

With the edit window open, you can click and hold the left mouse button and draw a box around that part of an object/prim you want to select, even if it is inside of another, providing you can isolate it in the box. This is made easier by ticking the Select Only My Objects in the Tools menu. This will also work to select the whole object, just enlarge the selection box.

Yes, that works fine. You risk selecting everything on the other side of the aquarium also, but you can avoid that by clicking on Tools - Select only my objects, which will prevent selecting walls, floors and such... Assuming they don't belong to you. If the walls, floors, whatever do end up selected, you can unselect them by shift-clicking them. Once you're sure you have selected what you *want* selected, then just rightclick on any selected prim and click Take.

If you have items behind the aquarium that makes it hard to select just the fish and the tank, try, using Hide selected on the client menu. That way, whatever you select will go away from you view, making it easier to find all. It wont dissapear though (no worries), just be temp hidden. So, hold down the shift, select all the aquarium stuff, and when you have it all, take it :) Then turn of hide selected again.
