Hello,
I see from other threads that I can open a 2nd 'instance' of SL by adding -multiple to the command line.
I run SL on a laptop with a large external monitor. I can configure the system to use both monitors, one as an extension of the other, giving a bigger 'desktop'.
In principle, can I open 2 SL windows, move one of them onto the smaller monitor, and just use it to show things like inventory, maps, chat, etc. ??
Has anyone tried this, or am I missing something ?

Not really.
"-multiple" enables you to run 2 SL sessions simultaneously, but they must be different accounts. I.e. you cant log in twice using the same avi. Inventory, map windows etc. are child windows and can't be moved outside the main window.

You can run two instances of SL using different AVs, and as I understand it (never tried it) you could put those on different monitors. It sounds like you want to run the same AV twice, putting the information stuff like the map, inventory, etc on one and having the other for moving around and looking at the world. I know you can't run the same AV twice on one screen, and you can't run it simultaneously on 2 pcs, because I've tried both . Not tried two on one pc with different monitors, but I don't see that it could work. If you try to log on an AV that is already logged on, it kicks the first one out and won't log the second on, so you end up not logged on at all.

FH (getting dizzy watching too many monitots) Hey Flutter Yes you can run multiple instances of Secondlife® on one machine if you have the video power. But you cannot connect the same avatar twice to the grid. This is kind of tecknicle but, I run 2 monitors, at work and at home, and here is how it works for me (yours may differ) Open Secondlife® on the primary number 1 monitor and when fully loaded and connected to the grid grab the window and move it to the second monitor. Then open the second instance, move it to the second monitor...etc, etc. I havn't been able to run it more than 2 times on my old Vic20 I have found that on my system if I try to open the program on the secondary monitor I connect but the display is all black. This is a perfect setup tho for just ruining s3c0ndlif3 on the main monitor and useing the other to surfs sum ov dat dere int3rn3ts or manipulate photos of cats with photochop. if'n you get dizzy it might be time to take a break too.

it can be done with a moniter and television with the proper software and hardware by basically extending your window lengthwise - sort of like wide-screen. you can move you mouse to utilize all areas. i've done it on my friend's system. i'm certain the same can be accomplished with 2 moniters. i'll ask her for the info/specs for you and post it as soon as i can.

I've tried doing what you are talking about and couldn't get the windows to move to the second monitor without extending the SL window the use both monitors. You could do what others have suggested and run a second account but I suspect you want what I wanted - which was to move chat, IM, build window, inventory, etc to the other monitor. If someone has found a way, I'd love to hear as well.
