Wow, I'd thought this would be happening and now researchers' studies are showing it. Here is an interview from NPR with Professor Jeremy Bailenson of Stanford's "Virtual Human Interaction Lab", which shows weight loss and self perception changes through vicarious reinforcement... "...the way you pick your avatar has very, very drastic affects on how you behave" (in RL)

So what does this mean for the fellow in that other thread who's looking for a "kill" animation?

So like... if my avatar does yoga and rides a bike every day....will I also get in better shape? Interesting... I think the research here is still very much in infancy though....we just haven't been interacting as virtual selves long enough to know what the long term, broad spectrum effect is going to be on people. I know way more people who don't do virtual, than who do. I'd be real curious to see what they have to say about all this in 20 years.

And what does that do to all the Lindens with horribly ugly/disfigured avatars?

From: Desmond Shang So ah... what if you have cat ears and a tail? You'll end up fuzzy and extra limber?

"i live vicariously thru my av"
then we should all join ImprovEverywhere and go make a statement in public! (wonders if IE is already in SL)

From: Milla Alexandre So like... if my avatar does yoga and rides a bike every day....will I also get in better shape? Serious point--I started making Victorian cycles because I thought penny farthings looked cute and I was hanging about in Caledon. I really hadn't done much riding in RL since college, but I started thinking "if I enjoy riding a virtual cycle, perhaps I ought get back into REAL cycling". Well, short story long, a year later, I ride about 10-15 miles a day. I'm hardly a competitive cyclist, but it gets me out of the house, and I have started to lose a bit of pudge I picked up over the last couple of years.

From: Milla Alexandre ...we just haven't been interacting as virtual selves long enough to know what the long term, broad spectrum effect is going to be on people. I know way more people who don't do virtual, than who do. I'd be real curious to see what they have to say about all this in 20 years. Not 90 seconds? Oh I'm sure there will be long term affects on society, just like TV or automobiles, but interestingly, these behavioral changes happen to us after just 90 seconds of interacting in world apparently! Here's a previous article from the same researcher before the results in the interview... From: Professor Bailenson This change in self-perception happens remarkably quickly. “It only takes 90 seconds of exposure to a mirror image transformed in age, height or gender to cause drastic changes in behavior." And congratulations Virrginia! That's wonderful, a true example of how we could apply this for improving ourselves couldn't we? It seems to me to be like any self improvement book that suggests visualizing yourself achieving your goal isn't it?
