You might like it. Do a LOT of research before buying anything (decay rate, bullet usage, etc). Don't buy anything from anyone. There are scammers galore there.

It is a slot machine posing as a game. This is not a metaphor, it is the fact.
Yep, a few people will walk out winners, most pump quarters into it until they are broke. It isn't all that much fun either. |

I played it in its extended beta and later release for over a year.
IMO it is a bit like one giant slot machine. Everything costs real money (at the rate of 10 Entropian dollars = 1$ US). You need money to buy mining equipment or weapons and then a continuing source of money to pay for wear and tear (everything wears out and must be repaired at a cost) and ammo etc. You get money for mining deposits or killing creatures/robots but for most people the money you get back is less than what you put in. Sometimes you win big globals (aka jackpots) which are flashed grid wide to spur on everyone. A few years back the company behind Entropia claimed their goal was a revenue rate of $1 per player per hour of play. I do not know if that is still their target but it makes for very expensive game play. Other than that combat is better than SL. Chat is about the same and the graphics are pretty horrible. There is almost no user made content available (this was what ultimately made it boring for me) My personal perspective is that if you want to shoot scary pixel creatures, there are far better and cheaper games. But it appeals to a certain subset of people who like the real money aspect. Of course your mileage may vary and it is free to download and log in... Occasionally I log in just to see how it has changed, but I much prefer SL. _____________________

Unfortunately, or maybe a blessing, I never got to the point to sweat mammals , to earn an income. I am still at the avatar appearance stage and I don't even know what to to next!

i wouldn't bother, there isn't any user made content and you can't make stuff, you have to pay for EVERYTHING, its really hard 2 make money in game and when you do its not much. SL has something that nothing else does (at the moment)

Sometimes I like to go in and run through the landscape trying to avoid being killed, but not very often. Maybe once a year.
It takes a special mood. _____________________

All those style of platforms only really replace the gambling restrictions, instead of pumping small change into a slot machine and pulling the handle, the variables are perhaps harder to perceive. If I really wanted a 'grind' style of game, I wouldn't choose one where my CC was continously on tap replenishing the unknown black hole of a widly unpredictable platform labled as 'fun'.
With a declared business model of 1USD per player per hour, do you really believe it is their intension to give you 'fun' along the way? Or to simply disguise the fact that you wait until your CC bill hits the mat, before you realise the meter has been ticking while you deluded yourself you might get rich? I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't be in SL if I felt that I would be paying a continous drip feed into a online platform, without at least some control and or plan to balance the books. I wonder if those that play, keep an eye on the balance meter ticking down as they let rip with some gun spewing bullets into a VR creature that perhaps is taking too long to die? Or at the crucial moment to netting a fortune, their CC max's out and they reach for the next one to feed into the slot. _____________________

However, the demo video for the new Cry 2 engine on the home page is just mind-blowingly awesome. It will be introduced next year. Any chance of LL following suit?

Wow, that sounds wretched. Why not play Guild Wars or WoW? Both are much cheaper, and they are certainly of much higher quality.
Guild Wars is free (after purchase obviously), and it has very high production values, a good community, and an overall fun MMO. WoW--we all know this is the best MMO out there...but it's not free, and it can be worse then Crack. And of course you can try 'HERO Online'--totally free, nice production value, large community, and pretty darn fun. Silkroad Online is another one... _____________________

Crytek engine will run what again? Entropia? Eh? That's impossible, that I know. There is no way an engine that detailed could run an MMO...not for another 7-10 years. I won't argue though, Crysis is the best looking game ever made. _____________________

Entropia...Thumbs Down

I played it in its extended beta and later release for over a year. IMO it is a bit like one giant slot machine. I played Entropia for a month or so, when frustrated with the many issues SL was having and decided to take a little break until things smoothed over. I have to completely agree with Finora about EU. It is nothing but a giant slot machine. You start off sweating animals, which gets old, oh after 5 mins. I sweated just enough to get the opallo rifle...which then needed ammo....100 rounds for 1PED - the gun uses 2 ammo burn per shot, and the weapons use more ammo burn as you purchase "better weapons". I have a weapon now that uses 6 ammo burn a shot, and a pistol that does a 4 ammo burn. I was putting US$ into this game more than I really wanted to. The only "leveling" you do, is within yourself by purchasing higher class armors, weapons etc. Like a few others said, I go in and see how far I can run before being pwn'd by a mob of strange looking creatures, and just waltz around their grid to check out the interesting creatures and scenery. I found myself overly excited when trying the mining technique for the first time, even though I only extracted some weird lysterium stone that was worth...0.01 PED...lame! Not only do you have to purchase all the tools to mine with, you have to purchase blueprints, and put them into machines that have a not so good success rate at even making the thing you want to make. Example: if you want to make a weapon, you will need several resources, and a blueprint. Take it to the manufacturing machine, and if you fail, you are out all your resources, and have to spend more money for bombs to find more resources to even try again. Giant Slot Machine, nothing more. EU has no age requirements, so there are children constantly screaming over the chat lines. There are only "octagons" for pvp, and I think one or two other zones that warn you before you go into them. Tid bits of info before dl'n EU...it is a gig in size, takes oh about an hr to dl on a great connection, graphics are ok...but to me everything kinda looked like slightly blown up linden trees. LOL If you like standing for hours, days, weeks, using a little mind controlled beam to extract sweat from animals, as you then run in circles after they attack you, until someone shoots it, or it gives up on chasing you, or you have so much money lying around your house that you have at least $200 to burn for basic level armor, weapons, ammo, mining equipment etc, I would recommend this game to you. There is a wikipedia page on Entropia Universe, I advise checking that out before downloading. I still have EU on my machine, I havent played in a while. It was ok for "something to do when bored, when no friends were online to talk with, etc" but nothing more. |
