Ok one of my friends a loooong time ago told me how to do this and I forget. I'm pretty sure it was an advanced menu feature and it had a quick key too. But when you did it, everything around your avatar was invisible, so it was like you were standing mid-air . . . does anyone know how to do this?

Enable the Advanced menu using Ctrl-Alt-D (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D on some systems)
To toggle the display of prims:
Advanced, Rendering, Types, Volume
OR
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-9

Also, if you are only wanting to hide a few items and not all of them, under Advanced / Rendering, there is a Hide Selected option - click that and then Edit the item you want to hide and it disappears, use Ctrl to select more items.
