i would like to publish some open source projects in php. do i have the right to use the name "secondlife" in their name ? Unlikely - LL has the trademark for "second life" in the areas of: i) Software that is used for providing multi-user access to an online 3D virtual environment; computer 3D virtual environment software, namely, software for use in creating, manipulating and participating in 3D virtual environments ii) Communication services in the nature of text messaging and electronic mail services used in an online virtual environment iii) Computer services, namely, hosting an on-line 3D virtual environment featuring a wide variety of user-defined subject matter and hosting an on-line 3D virtual environment featuring a wide variety of user-defined subject matter that may be accessed by means of communications networks; design and development of multimedia and three dimensional virtual environment software. So you might be able to use "Second Life" if your software is in no way related to LL's Second Life, and the software is not in any of the above areas, and couldn't be confused or mistakenly associated with LL's Second Life in anyway (which presumedly isn't the case since you are posting here). Technically, LL has not registered "Secondlife" merely "Second Life" but the similarity between the two is so close, that you wouldn't be able to get away with it. do i have the right to use the name "sl" in their name ? Although LL would like you to follow their brand guidelines as per the page quoted, at present LL has only applied to register trademark SL, the application has not been granted. The applications current status is "A request for an extension of time to file an opposition has been filed at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board." so the application looks like it will be opposed, and possibly not granted (at which point it becomes dubious how enforcable LL's guidelines would be).
