I'm using audacity to cut songs into 10 second segments, i heard that there is a more efficient method then just cut, paste, cut, paste....rinse and repeat.

now this method can take forever. is there any other program that can just have parameters set and then cut the song into appropriate segments, and how would i do this?

anything you can do with cut/paste can usually be done with a 3rd party macro util. But the folks there would be better suited to walk you thru that.

You could do the following:

Convert the file into an mp3 if necessary. You will probably want to put it into a folder by itself.

Download and install Slice audio splitter from http://www.nch.com.au/splitter/index.html. Note that it asks if you want to install some other non-free software during the install process. Uncheck the boxes if you don't want the non-free stuff.

I just cut Porcupine Tree's Shallow into 9 second segments in just a few seconds with very little effort.

Then you'd have to run a mp3 to wav file converter on each resulting mp3 file.

It didn't work at first, it looked like it worked instantly, but gave no output. I checked the company's forum and found a post that said to install http://www.nch.com.au/components/mp3el.exe so I did and then it worked.

To upload into SL you would then run a batch mp3 to wav converter.

I have nothing useful to contribute to this thread but I just had to say that Porcupine Tree is the greatest band ever!

I think I'll listen to Chip's station a while.

What is a good way to batch convert the mp3 files to wav files, with minimal effort, and with the volumes matching properly?

Audacity's chain function seems needlessly geeky and obscure.

I downloaded Spark Audio converter and that failed totally.

Irfanview doesn't do sound files.

I've been using avsmedia audio and video tools for a couple of years so far. Really nice products for a low price.

http://www.avsmedia.com/

$29.99 for 10 audio tools including bulk bit rate conversions.

I use a program like this.
http://www.sonicspot.com/wavsplitter/wavsplitter.html
Do By Time, the 10 seconds, and it will auto cut it for you. :)
You just have to turn the mp3 into a Wav file, and then convert the wav clips into mp3's again, not that hard in Audacity. :)

Nice ones, assuming it works, Haven't tried it yet.

It's been at least 4 years since I wanted to upload a piece of music into SL, but better to find the application late rather than never, I suppose.

Still not free, though.
