Yesterday, while I was still blissfully on 1.18, a friend of mine who had downloaded this new viewer asked another friend about Preferences. The knowledgeable friend told her to click the "Custom" button on the Graphics page and change her settings there.
Soooo... When we got the mandatory download notice today, I downloaded the new viewer, brought up Preferences, went to Graphics...
And I can't change one blinking thing. The viewer has decided I can stand a Draw Distance of 128 and Max Particles of 4096, despite my previous settings of 64 and 256.
I sent a Support ticket. I think it is extremely arrogant of SL to presume they know best what our Preferences should be. If we *have* to have this new viewer, the very least they can do is let us decide our Preferences for ourselves.
(I have a simwide mall that is very prim intensive. These new settings are terrible for me.)

I've been using the Release Candidate which I have read is essentially the same as the 1.19.1 viewer. I don't have this problem. It is as the friend in your post stated, by checking off the custom box you should get additional fields with sliders, checkboxes to customize your settings. I'm assuming you can see these since you mentioned what your actual settings are. Are you saying the slider buttons don't move and the check boxes don't check/uncheck?

I don't fully understand your complaint - did you click the "custom" checkbox and locate the sliders, only to find that you cannot change the positions of the sliders?
If so, that is annoying indeed - but the viewer lets me set my draw distance as low as you'd like to, and I think I can set particles that low too, so my guess is there's something buggy in your installation rather than arrogance on the part of LL. Did you try (a) clearing your cache and relogging; (b) manually deleting your preferences file and relogging; and (c) uninstalling and reinstalling the viewer? I don't know whether these will work but it's probably the same steps support will put you through also.

Unchangeable Sliders
04-04-2008 13:25
I clicked the CUSTOM box. I can unclick the Bumpmap and Shiny box and those other 3 boxes right there.
I have NO sliders on any of the other settings, nor on what used to be the Sound slider at the bottom of my window. The program decided my settings and I simply cannot change them.

My first thoughts are this: 1. Make sure your graphic card's drivers are current There are links to all the typical graphics card vendors at: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/03/the-new-viewer-a-well-oiled-machine/As you are using an ATI RAEDON X800, you'll go to the ATI support page at: http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html and follow their directions. 2. Downgrade to 1.19.0 Note that 1.19.0 *AND* 1.19.1 are currently mandatory for the main grid. You can find links to 1.19.0 (which uses the old graphics engine) at: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/04/03/the-new-viewer-a-well-oiled-machine/3. Assuming it is an older system, this might require a future upgrade of the graphics card, the computer, or both, as I am sure there will eventually be a requirement for the newer graphc system. Downgrading to 1.19.0
04-04-2008 14:02
Has anybody successfully downgraded to 1.19.0? First of all, I thought it was very crashy. Secondly, once a new viewer has been made mandatory, I've never heard of being able to downgrade to an older version.

From: Apple Pinkney I have NO sliders on any of the other settings, nor on what used to be the Sound slider at the bottom of my window. The program decided my settings and I simply cannot change them. Now that is interesting: sounds like some local glitch, as I don't think there was any change to the sound slider. Try this. Go into appearance for a moment. Do you have sliders to adjust your avatar's appearance? Also, in preferences, check under network, and see if there are any sliders there. I'm wondering if, for some reason, the sliders are somehow simply missing from your interface. With as glitchy as things can be sometimes, I wouldn't doubt it. In which case, it could simply be fixed with a simple (as simple as it is, of course) reinstall. Mari

Robin just downloaded and used the 1.19.0. I'm going to do the same when I get home from the Borin' place. (Ooh, should prob'ly let Misses Caldera know, too!) Mari

Mari Welll.... I am so desperate I went back to that old post and downloaded 1.19.0, fully convinced I was going to get the announcement you have to upgrade to the newer version, like we *always* did in the past. Instead.... It worked. My old Graphics, Graphics Detail and Adv. Graphics pages are back. So now I'm all set... Until they make the freaking upgrade mandatory from this version. Sigh.... I want to play *on* the computer, not *with* the computer
