Hello fellow forum dwellers, Recently I've been creating a little hangout spot, garden, changing room, dance floor etc. on group owned land. It's open to all, building allowed, auto-return set at 10 minutes, no object entry, no scripting except group members, etc. I figured I had everything covered. However, last night someone came along and dropped a griefing device. We removed it and banned the giver of the gift. Then tonight someone managed to drop one of those mario thingies which ended up crashing the sim. I couldn't file an abuse report because of server problems or some such and I couldn't see anything anyway, thanks to mario. Couldn't find the source of the marios quick enough either, because ...... well the sim crashed. When the sim came back up, I tried to file a new abuse report, but the friendly fellow's name had disappeared from search. So that was a no go. I'm now left with the feeling that I can't basically have my friendly little corner open to all unless it's watched 24/7. And am left paranoid that everytime I walk away from it, someone will come along and crash the place. Main question : how long does it take to crash a sim? Should I reduce my auto-return time? Also any other suggestions that you might have are greatly appreciated

shorten your auto return time to 1 min. restrict create object or building to group members only it won't stop the determined griefer but it will help a little bit. just my $2L

Sims can be crashed essentially instantly and there's not much you can do about it. One thing you can do: not live in fear. You *are* being griefed 24/7 if you have to live that way. What I'd recommend: deed your land to a group with special roles created, and get rid of all the restrictions. Here's why - You can make a group category such that your friends can't sell the land out from under you, but they COULD deal with griefers. And there ya go - coverage and griefer defence as needed! Just return any unwanted objects with the About Land tabbie, also - don't bother hunt for them.

If the griefer's name was missing from search, sounds like someone did get him effectively AR'd.

From: Desmond Shang do: not live in fear. From: Sally Silvera Resident question: how do I quote multiple replies??????? Copy/Paste quotes to Wordpad. Only summit one reply, jsut cancle the rest after copy. As to security, you can go as far as you want, or as little. It depends on location and what you have that they are griefing. Best weapon is to ignore them. They crave attention. Don't give it to them or they'll keep comming back. If you run into serious trouble with griefers, give me an IM and I'll discuss your area with you and offer suggestions. [And Des is right. With a Linden-made object located in the Library inventory, one can drop any sim in less than 3 seconds. Proven, reported, still there.] ~Jessy

I always use copy and paste....and put it in quote tags.... or you can just open two new tabs in your browser quoting each of the two people you want to quote and copy and paste what is in the reply box.

I believe that mario block thing was a grid-wide attack. At least, it happened in at least two other places earlier today. The griefer was online but did not respond to my IM telling him to come clean up his mess. I gathered up some friends... by the time i got a third person to help me AR, all the hundreds of obnoxious, bouncy, self-replicating, crash-inducing, particle-emitting blocks disappeared, and I think the region was restarted (we were all force logged off). It may have been due to our AR's or it may have been a coincidence. When i returned, the griefer was already gone from SL... no longer appears in search /me wonders if its okay to name him.

Im just curious but are there any sl renowned locations near you. Im thinking about the attack on abbots that I mentiond in another thread and wondered if someone is targetting well known sl locales.

Not sure actually, but I've wondered about that myself, seeing as our little corner seems to attract a more than average number of new residents. Will have to check that out.

/me appologises for digging this one up again, but.....
/me was in usual helpful mode: so i was just hanging around in my little neck of the mainland, a new resident pops along. We engage in some friendly banter, I offer advice, give said new resident newbie information kit and such, ..................
/me leaves friendly mode with some difficulty....... said new resident subsequently dropped the mario thingy on the land, which subsequently crashes the entire sim
