what do you do when?

what do you do when your ex-girlfriend is harassing you, and having her friends harass you (including emailing you telling you they are having you perm. banned, and sending you a note card stating they are going to contact the police, liden lab, and yahoo to seek legal action) then fill out false abuse reports on you in an attempt to get you banned from SL? Is there a high chance of me being banned, just because she got a lot of her friends to report me?

Report her and her friends for harassment. (^_^)

My guess, seeing one person reporting the numbers of people making false reports would show an obvious pattern. (^_^)y

Include as much of it as you can in an AR.

I'm sorry to hear of this, Miles. You definitely SHOULD document everything you can, but you can also take some comfort from the fact that LL has access to both chat and IM logs, and that false ARs based upon things alleged to have happened in-world probably won't get very far for that reason. At the same time, LL almost never (to my knowledge) acts upon reports of abuse that were alleged to have occurred outside of SL.

Thanks for all the info everyone, I log all IMs and Local chat, but some of the time we were in voice, do you know if linden lab has the ability to listen to previous voice chats?

Ok this is a copy of a notecard she got a friend of hers to write to me today, now mind you, we have been broken up for quite some time, I have not harassed her at all, and had her muted the majority of the time, she has been trying to get back with me. Now is it just me or does that seem threatening? Is that type of threat allowed in the TOS of SL?

Miles:

On behalf of Jazzmin *****, I'm writing to request that you discontinue all contact with Jazzmin with reference to recent harassment claims by her, or risk legal actions by Linden Labs, the Yahoo Abuse Team and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

I do not know the details of your dispute with Jazzmin, and I do not want to be involved, other than to provide legal guidance to Jazzmin.

Harassment carries penalties within Second Life and Yahoo, and is also a serious crime. I will be forwarding this note card to the authorities listed above on Monday, August 10, 2009 unless you cease all contact and threats toward Jazzmin and her family. As you may know, the FCC has strict laws prohibiting harassment and can easily locate offenders by using by IP address matching with cooperation from Linden Labs, Yahoo and your local police.

I trust that you understand the seriousness of the crime of harassment and that this matter need not become more complicated by involving the authorities mentioned.

It's an empty threat.

The worst that would happen is maybe linden lab would suspend you for a day or two, but then they'd do the same if you ARed your ex.

I had someone post a very real threat to me in their profile, which is definitely against the law, and all Linden Lab did was suspend her for a day and tell her to remove the offensive language from her picks, or face a longer suspension.

I'd simply keep filling my *mute* list, after you take the time to report every case of harassment. LL can't listen back on voice chat. so make sure you suddenly become mute and refuse to speak in voice to any of them. type type type.. and have record LL can refer to. Kinda sad that in the vast big SL world, they can find nothing better to do with their time. Such sad, strange little people. =^.^=

If that blanked out name isn't Linden, that crap has no value whatsoever. Do yourself a favour, mute them all and go on your merry ways. They just want to fuck with your mind.

The main thing you need to do is to choose your gfs more carefully. You obviously have very poor taste and need to get that sorted out before you get involved in any more relationships.

You could always make a new Avi, if they don't stop.. Then carry on with your second life.

Actually the above is good advice. Make an alt, have fun getting it looking presentable (doesn't have to cost much if anything if you go for freebies). By the time you have done all that the ex-GF will have lost interest due to a lack of response on your main. Then you can go back to your main and carry on as before - except for the meeting loser GFs that is

each time someone sends a note, or an im, do not respond, it is very important you do not respond. when they send a notecard, decline it (if it is a name you recognize) you will still get it in your trash, but to them it will show declined.

AR each person who does contact you regarding the ex, and again I repeat, do not respond to them, AR then mute. Let them keep making alts (heck it could be her making alts, who knows)

and don't worry, unless you actually did do something, then they do not have anything to stand on.

(especially considering that notecard you showed us said that the person writing it doesn't know what happened.... so um... exactly why did they write the card?)

Just ignore them, go on with your Second Life, and don't stress about it.

No. Voice takes place on Vivox, not LL, servers. Vivox has the ability to record voice, but it is very costly and LL does not provide that feature in SL. They wouldn't do it in the background either - one would very quickly fill an entire server cloud with recordings of people talking about their lawns.

Virtual harassment does indeed exist and it can be upsetting to the 'recipient' (avoiding a word some use as a pejorative.)

She sounds very immature, at best; the person's name she is using on the lawyer-impersonation note card may be a new boyfriend or may be her alt.

I'd continue to AR it, and other than that it's always a bit tricky how to deal with a stalker/harasser. Some go away if ignored, some increase. Some go away if barked back at to back off; some increase. Go with your instincts is usually good advice, I think.

In her case she seems to want attention, so maybe a big 'yawn' would convince her to go find some other pastime.
