If you've made a deal to rent some land, have made an initial payment, made the land yours, and so on, is there a clean way to cancel the deal and recover at least some of the money you paid in? Reason for cancellation: a very serious personal problem that can't be made public.
Thanks for any advice on this difficult problem.

It's really upto the landlord. Some have refund clauses, some have no refund clauses. There's no rule if that's what you mean, you're relying on the good nature of the person.
Approach the landlord politely and ask if there's a refund option due to unforeseen circumstances.

As a 'no refunds' landlord myself, other people's personal issues are their financial loss, not mine. Full stop. Were that not to be the case, drama in SL would cost *me* hundreds of thousands of $L each month while the drama~laden flitted from one financial meltdown to another. Why not? No consequences, yey! And everyone knows about the other side: how ugly it is when a land baron backs out of what should have been a stable, reliable land deal. These forums are graced with those horror stories regularly. What isn't mentioned, is that a tenant is about 10x as likely to stiff a landlord than the other way around. We are seen as "deep pockets" and there are a lot of people who just shut off SL one day never to come back, while the landlord politely sends reminders for a week or two, losing tier the whole way down. I get about four to six tenant defaults a day. After a couple dozen months of it, it starts to get old. Best is that both parties honour exactly what they said they would do. Simple, fair. * * * * * On the other hand, even someone as tough about it as I am will generally quietly refund within 24 ~ 48 hours or so of a deal. But never, ever admit to it.
Quietly discuss the matter with your landlord, be candid and honest, make no demands and you might be pleasantly surprised with the results.
* * * * * Shush, little devil on my left shoulder. I heard you the first time.

I used to give refunds when people changed their minds. Depends on how much the person cares about going above and beyond for a fellow resident. There is no advantage to them otherwise. They don't have to worry about sullying their reputations, because in SL you can pretty much be an ass and still find newbies who don't know how assy you are.

It always sucks when you buy something you can't use for some reason, but it's just part of life.
