I've been hearing a lot about it, but I have no idea what exactly it is. Thank you in advance for any links explaining/etc.

Apparently it turned out only to be a trailer for Matrix 4. Then someone pulled the cable out and people found themselves not in the realworld but back in Matrix 1.

It's SPACE to be kept OPEN as scenery around your island sim. It runs grouped up with other sims per processor core because, as long as it's kept OPEN for SPACE, it shouldn't require a ton of CPU cycles. Or... That's what LL thought when they set it up and named it. (=_=)y

Indeed till a large segments of users used them to fleece renters by charging full sim rates on rental properties

So LL had to make policy changes in order to prevent the misuse of the sims by unscrupulous users.

I understand what this is about now. I've seen Void sims used as full combat sims as well, and that must be a strain on their servers, so they say, so they're implementing a price increase to make up for this, but the honest users of the Void Openspace sims get shafted.

Yep, it's the way things happen.

It's like the alcohol taxes to cover the people that drink irresponsibly. Everyone pays for their decisions to misuse something that they may use responsibly.

Having just made a rum cake... I'm kinda not liking the morons that made me pay a couple extra bucks for the rum.

LL had the choice to cap server capacity per sim. What did they do ? They increased the amount of prims without capping the server capacity.

It was a business decision, it allowed them to boost next years earnings for investors. there are ofcourse fools who will believe that LL miscalculated the usage, or that somebody abused voids.

It's funny how you can fool some of the people all of the time.

Don't forget selling them as freestanding sims unattached to Full sims.

A lot of need for sailing space or "views" on a sim that is surrounded by 8 true void areas where nothing can travel.

I would go with this one, though I am not entirely sure they do not have a vague intent which would make it "maneuvering assets in a proactive business progression" as opposed to "fleecing" though it is still "fleecing" but in a "maneuvering assets in a proactive business progression" sense of "fleecing".

See, you are fleecing but not fleecing kind of in a way sort of, but not really.

Notwithstanding nonsense and propoganda about misuse of sims based on a totally vague and undefined criterion, Linden Lab's actions in enabling the OS Sims with huge increases in prim allowance and its own use of OS Sims in an "abusive" manner clearly defy the logic of any such ruse.

Well not quite, LL called them voids and said rather early on in the process that it was ok to rent them out for use other than being open spaces. Indeed the question as to whether it was ok to rent them out for use other than being open spaces cropped up over two years ago and was given the thumbs up by the folks at the Lab.
