I have tried several times to upload my avatar pic for these forums and no matter how tiny I make the file....it tells me it's too big.

I have gone well below the size restrictions and it still does not excpet anything I try
to upload..... 50x50 pixel at 14kb.....should be ok right???

I'm confused...is there some kind of secret squirrel image code I need to know to have an avatar on here? lol

Is it the right file type? I know it only takes certain kinds. Which ones though, I don't remember.:o

I use JPEGs and they work fine.

Milla, I have the same problem. The picture would be so small, it's pointless. I still keep trying to find the happy medium, but I can't seem to get the file size work and still retain a quality photo.

Don't know much about the choices of files, but I used a .bmp.

Um....don't know what you're talken about there Max....I know all that...I'm a photographer lol But there is no mention of these forums and how to post an avatar pic. I'm guessing the original shot perhaps has to be done with the 512 scale. Unfortunately I never take shots with that scale because the clarity is horrid.

I was hoping I could just crop one of my existing shots and resize it to add an avatar image for my forums posts. But thus far it simply is not working....no matter what file type I use. Oh well.....I'll continue until I get it, dam it. lol

Stormy, I had the same problem as you can see from my avi here....it wasn't really worth putting up. That was a close up I took inworld....but you can't even see it.

Hmm....obviously there is some kind of glitch...because I just made a jpg file that isn't even visible to the naked eye lol and it's still telling me it's too big. LMAO

yeah...i think that could be a glitch milla. My pics are usually taken straight from SL and cropped in Gimp, then save them as a jpeg.
Im sorry but I really dont know what you could do :(

That's exactly what i did. Took a big picture and cropped my face and resized the image. Not sure why it's not working for you.:(

SAME HERE.

I have tried and tried and tried. Nothing works. I will monitor this thread though in case there is a solution to this problem.

However, you know that by the time its figured out, a new forum development will be implemented and it will not matter anymore. lol

It's pretty screwy. I resize the original, then crop it and move it over to a new file in photoshop and size that one at 35 pixels square. I bring everything else to 0 for small file size and I still can't attach it as it is too big. I would need the pixel size at 25 and that is way too small! I think I have given up on it for now :(

Maybe that is where I'm going wrong........I'm not keeping the original image, instead creating a new one. Hmmmm........I will try this later tonight me thinks!!

I just tried changing my avatar picture (not profile picture) and it went right through without a problem. 50x50, 72dpi, 3.2kB.

One thing you could try is tweaking the JPG compression (aka quality), drop it slightly, and see if you can get the file size a bit smaller.

Another thing I will point out is computers measure file sizes differently, depending on the operating system and the way the hard drive is structured. It can be an issue with small files. Without getting too technical, the size of the smallest 'chunk' of hard drive space can vary, so a 14.9kb file on one computer could report as 16kb, and as 64kb on another computer...

Edited because I was looking at the wrong picture the first time around.

I know widgets are little Mac applications, but is there anything similar for Windows? Like the Image Shackle widget? Not the greatest I guess, but it always works well for quick resizing used for forum avatar pics.

I just uploaded my first ever avatar here and it went up without a problem.

50 x 50 pixels and 2. something or other KB

No probs.

If the OP wants to send me their pic I'll do the same for them. PM's are turned on.

I updated my forum avatar and profile pics yesterday and it worked fine. I took a 256 x 256 taken in SL and saved to hard drive, resized the image in irfanview to 50 x 50 pixels and 100 x 100 pixels respectively, then saved them as jpgs. Both uploaded no problem.

Hmmm...
Ok...so then I wonder if it IS my operating system. I'm on windows xp....and I use photoshop and so far I've tried saving the file as a jpg and bmp and it just simply will not take a file I create....not even a 10x10 pixel....which obviously is way too small...but I'm trying to determine if it's me....or if it's this upload system bouncing everything back.

It's maddening...I have cut to bits a bunch of different files to see if I can create something that will work... and it just doesn't like me, period. lol

Ah ha!!! PNG file worked!!! Don't know if it's gonna show here....but it took it.....so it's gotta be the way my computer is translating the file sizes.

I think you've given me the itch to change mine now. Maybe tonight...
