Objects Moving off my Land

Ok, I got up this morning to a series of IMs and E-mails, telling me that various items were being returned to me from my neighbors parcel, and some even further away.

I have no idea how they got there, things like a hammock and a beer keg and a palm tree don't usually tend to go wandering!!

Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior recently? I'm not sure what has happened to some of the items, have to go through my lost and found.

But anybody else seeing any odd movement?

I'nm not seeing my own objects wandering, but I am finding odd bits of stuff owned by others floating around my land. And it's stuff they've lost rather than stuff they've put there on purpose.

And what is very odd is that wall and floors, etc. on my own builds are moving slightly from one day to the next, throwing everything out of alignment.

Yes Chas, I have prim drift, too, but this is whole objects shooting 20-40 meters away, and across sim boundaries!

This is odd.

This week, I had some trees returned to me that I placed several weeks ago. I found it strange but figured I didn't place them on my land correctly. Perhaps it is the same situation?

Check the permissions on the moved objects. The moved objects might be set to allow anyone to move. Occasionally, I set objects out --freebie objects with open perms of all kinds-- and forget to check the perms on it. I have come back later to find them moved by someone and when I check the moved object, discover my oversight.

Govindira,

I thought of permissions after I started going through the returned items. That wasn't it either. :(

Xplorer,

I'm not sure how to place something on my land incorrectly :p Been looking at permissions and stuff, but I can't figure this out yet.

Some not very interesting ways this could have happened include if the objects:

- were physical and just rolled off after getting bumped. (Unlikely for these objects, unless it was an "Editor accident.";)

- got selected by accident together with something else in the Editor, and were moved along with the other item.

- had "Allow anyone to move" checked.

Personally, though, I suspect something involving telekinesis and a poltergeist.

I hate prim drift

been playing SL for almost 2 years and NOW I am dealing with prim drift.

my floors in my store keep shifting out of alignment, and this is just recently (like last few days)

Ihavent had an issues with anything like for in all my time in SL until this last week. The first day a few pieces of a home build had moved, i thought ok i must have been tired last night...

Next day i wake up and several other pieces had drifted out of place...this time i knew it wasnt me.

Only explanation i could think of was there position didnt get updated correctly server side when id placed/moved them, and so reverted back over time maybe.

Either way its bloody weird, but since linking the build nothing has moved since *fingers crossed*

So what causes prim drift? Do the servers get confused?

I had this happen a few weeks ago, and the funny thing was that items in my club were returned to me, in the middle of an event, including a dance pole that a dancer was dancing on, an occupied stage the main dance floor and the Dj booth. Cue the 'WTF?!?!' IMs......

I have not seen prim drift as described here (on many many sims) for nearly a year, I'd agree with the posts above that most instances are likely to be resident errors (accidental selection or open move perms). The accidental selection can be fixed by simply locking the objects down (it is an option in the edit menu). Also, consider whether other people have been granted the ability to select your objects (in the friends list).

Items can drift on placement, even if you type in the numbers manually if there is lag on the sim, and particulalry if you are a long distance from the sim origin (0,0,0) - so a skybox at 500m at 256,256 can, under certain (rare) circumstances, can be vulnerable to mis-rezzing and/or drift (the simulator makes object location calculations from the origin, and those further away from the origin are apparently trickier to calculate)

You aren't emitting any particles by chance? A butterfly or dragonfly rezzer?

I have seen some prim drift. A window on my lounge moved about a half meter last week.

Today, one of my tenants tells me that her rental box is missing. Turns out that her box, and 2 others, have disappeared into the ether. No clue where they went.

Probably the same place that all my socks and pens go. ;)

Actually I'd like to know that as well.

While I happily admit to being blonde, I know I've had prims moving ever so slightly without "resident error". And not due to lag either, unless the lag happened overnight.

When you place an object at a given location, say:

x= 10.200, y=59.000, z=35.000

the object is not necessaarily ACTUALLY at that exact location. the precision shown is only in terms of significant figures, so the object could (for example) be at:

x=10.200165, y=59.000112, z=34.999998

The sim continues to make fractional calculations on where an object should be, and it does not do this precisely, and it does not think in decimals. So, when it makes its calculations, prims can drift by say 0.00001 m and you do not notice it. But if it keeps happening (and not cancelling out), then the cumulative effect over time can be 0.001 m, or 0.01 m in one direction, and then you notice it. And things get out of kilter.

The calculations are less accurate as you move from the origin of the sim (0,0,0).

If you want to check out this phenomenon, and see where your objects are with greater precision you can edit the viewer by changing the file "skins/xui/en-us/floater_tools.xml" - look for the values for how the object sub tab is configured, and change the first three instances of

decimal_digits="3" to decimal_digits="5"

Then when you relog, you will be able to see the position of objects to FIVE decimal places instead of THREE.

When I lay out a sim, or build objects, I try to work in multiples of 2, 4, 8, 16, etc .... so, my road objects are 4m wide, and located with a centreline that is divisible 16 - and they never ever drift, ever. The sim calculates things using base 2, not base 10.
