Which would be a better choice for SL, an Nvidia 9500 GT with 1 GB of GDDR2 versus an Nvidia 9500 GT with 512MBof GDDR3?

The GDDR3 version. The faster memory will improve more performance than twice as much of the slower GDDR2 memory.

Does 38.99 bucks, no shipping charge, for a re-certified (used) one by MSI, at NewEgg.com, seem like a good deal?

This would potentially be going into my old system which currently has a ATI x800. Would the 9500 GT be an improvement?

I know I should get a better one but money is tight. If I improve the video card and put in 4 gigs of ram I would probably not keep feeling so bad about how old my system is and wishing I hadn't bought both of my kids quad-cores and me nothing, without breaking the bank.

Might the 9500 possibly NOT require a power supply upgrade? My current power supply claims to put out 305 watts. Nvidia says the 9500 needs a 350 watt power supply. Would I be likely to fry something trying the 9500 with the current power supply?

The current power supply is a "Hipro HP -P3087F3".

It's dimensions are said to be 5.5 x 5.9 x 3.4 - Inches.

Based on those dimensions, would a stock, normal (non-Gateway specific) power supply fit properly?

Go to http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jspand put in your system hardware, and it will give you an estimate based on what you are running. The 350 watts is to allow overhead for other hardware, but you may not have a problem if you are running a basic system. That said, a 350-400 watt PSU is fairly cheap as well.

I have not used the ATI unit you mention, but a 9500 should give medium-high settings with clouds and water effects turned on.

9500 is the bare bones card to run SL, maybe better off with a secondhand 8800. 9600's are cheap and 9800's aren't that expensive, they might stop making 9400 and 9500 soon.
