Information about your system might be useful.

You can get some system information from within Second Life, in the Help, About Second Life dialog. You can highlight the information shown there, press control c to copy it, and paste it here with control v. (at least you can on a windows machine) The information needed, at least for starters, would be what type of processor, what operating system, how much ram, what kind of video card, what video driver, and what version of Second Life viewer.

Also, what kind of internet service do you have, are you on a network, if so, is it a wired or wireless network, what model router, if any, and have you been using Second Life on this system successfully for any length of time?

Lucky you, take it as a sign from above, shut the computer down and go do something worthwhile with your life instead.

You downloaded the new viewer, that's why it's handy to know your system configuration.

Follow Suezanne's instructions.

(the new viewer demands more from your system than the older ones)
