How much land can a group with one owner/contributor own and maintain a $40 tier?
Would making an alt and giving them a premier account help? Would it be worth the saveings in tier to pay for another annual premier account?

$40 is 8192m of land plus the 512 tier free for a total of 8704m. For group owned land there is a 10% bonus, so that should add another 870.4m available.

Would it be worth the saveings in tier to pay for another annual premier account? firstly if you plan to use a group to hold land, be sure that the group has more than just the owner as a member (need 2 to keep it active) I am at the 40 level of tier I wanted to own another 512 instead of tiering up to 75 a month and doubling my tier level... I decided to make my alt premium and pay quarterly so for me it was cheaper to make my alt premium (plus she gets the stipend, granted it is not much but it helps) If I needed to double the level of tier (land wise) then it would be cheaper to stick with the same account and just up the tier it all depends on your situation just sit and do the math ....

From: Starfire Desade I believe it is cheaper to increase your own tier as opposed to making another full paying account. Generally speaking, it depends. It would cost me $25/month for my land as an individual. It costs me $16 as two Premiums ($8 each). Since I purchased the annual membership for my alt, the yearly fee less weekly stipend works out to approximately $13/yr additional. $13/yr + ($16/mox12mo/yr) = $205/yr $205/yr / 12mo/yr = $17.08/mo So it's actually $7.92/mo, or $95.04/yr, less to do it with two Premium accounts.
