I recently aquired a visitor counter, it was made by aaron linden.
I have placed it in my house, and for the life of me cannot work out how to use it.
It came with a script, i havent edited it at all, but i can see that it says i can ask help, list etc... but none of them seem to be doing anything when i put it into the chat.

If it helps, in case anyone has one it is a teeny little thing, a gray pole, with a black small square on top.

Any ideas how to use it?

Personally, I'd suggest going and finding a Visitor Coutner made by a Resident.

Most Linden created items I've seen..well....I'll be nice and say they leave much to be desired.

You can buy some nice ones for @100L$ or so. More options, more L$ of course. Almost any of these made by Residents come with instructions.

As for the one you have, all I can suggest is looking in the Contents tab of the Visitor Counter and seeing if they were smart enough to include a notecard to explain the useage.

~Jessy

EDIT: Reread your post. Type "help" or "/1 help" and it may give you a list of commands in Chat.

Dude, you are a true and good friend, and I love you like the brother that my mom claims she never had, but you are in fact acting like a flaming douche on white toast with a side order of dickknob salsa..maybe you should reconsider this course of action and we go find something else to do.

Hi Isabella, I use the Linden visitor counter myself, just so I have some idea who's been in my house. I remember having trouble with it at first, but it works fine for me now. The commands I use are in chat, "say list" to see the list of visitors along with a count, and "reset list" to erase the current list and set it back to zero. I can also say "help" to get a list of commands.

I would suggest two things to get yours to work. Edit the item, and open the script. First, make sure the "Script is Running" box in the bottom left of the script window is checked. Second, reset the script using the Reset button in the bottom right. (If you can't mod a script, you can reset scripts in a selected item through the Tools menu, I think.)

If yours still doesn't work, IM me in world and I'll send you my working copy. :)

I think Ava's right. The one I got out of the freebie box at NCI did not have an on_rez reset in the script, so it did nothing at first. Let me know if you want an updated script, but resetting the one you have should get it started.

P.s. that one also was in a snazzy but primful 4-prim item. I put the script in an unobtrusive single prim that I just recolor to fit the settings. You can actually put it in anything that is mod that you happen to have where you want it ... I put it in some lillies along with bird sounds once :)

Yep, I have the same one. Works like a charm. You just have to jiggle it a bit to get it working the first time, and it works great from then on out.

I put mine in a vase. Prim efficiency!

I used the same thing my first year in SL. I had to stop sometime late last year though because it became brittle. Sometimes the thing simply froze and I'd have to reset the script, which of course wipes out all data. You might try resetting the script on yours to jumpstart it. (Right-click the object and click Edit. Then select Tools > Reset Scripts in Selection.)

One problem with the linden script is that it eventually runs out of memory. I heavily modified it to keep a rolling list so it wouldn't run out of memory (and added notecard giving functionality to new visitors), but even my modified version crapped out sometimes; I personally think it was due to some undocumented change to the scripting system- perhaps how scripts deal with memory- last year.

@Wildefire, as i recall one other mod i made to the script was to clean up its "listener" handles (and mine has never run out of memory). However, I don't use it in high-traffic areas either. I also made it listen on an alternate channel, added multiple owners, made it whisper or just say to owner .... i forget. was a while ago. But you might try cleaning up the handles, if you haven't already.

Oh yes, I did that long ago. You're right- it's an evil channel 0 script by default. Yes, the area I used to keep it was around 10K traffic at the time. The original script could only hold 267 names, I think (due to memory limitation), and that got maxxed within a couple days, typically, leading me to cycle the list.

I REALLY wish I had time to work with LSL's HTTP and XMLRPC capabilities. You could make an amazing traffic counter using those and a web interface. Others have done this, but I think you pay service fees to use them.

:D

I modded mine too, as wasting 3 prims was not something I was about to do when I only had the 117 that came with my first 512m!

I turned mine into a log (called "visitor log" naturally!) and stuck it in my campfire. :)

If you have your land set to group, be sure to set the counter to group (in the edit window, general tab, show's what group it's set to, and a button to set as well).

Then, operation is simple.

help - prints out help
say list - lists out visitors
clear list - clears visitor list.

Easy to use and free, although some of the resident made ones have a bit more functionality to them. So, if you're looking for a simple one the freebie linden counter works just fine.

I think that is "reset list" to clear the visitor list
