It's your old friend, Edwardo Jardberg, D.N. Really big question. I have lots of terrific music in my iTunes library on the you-know-what computer. And I have just acquired a tiny piece of land. I don't think it's fruitful to try to import all this music into SL. So here's my question. Is there any way I can make a connection between my OS X Leopard and SL for the sole purpose of piping through whatever music I happen to be playing in Leopard, so that it will sound on my land for the benefit of me and my buddies? I guess I really doubt that it can be done, and I am not that knowledgable about such things in general. But if I need to do something hi tech on the Leopard side, I have a very good friend who can and would help me with that end.

Very grateful for any help/advice/encouragement /discouragement/whatever' and of course, more.

My belief is that you can pipe in your own music but haven't tried it myself. Start your reading on the following page: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Streaming_Music

My friend and I have pooled part of our music collections, and stream it onto our several parcels. We use http://www.shoutcaststreaming.us/, with their AutoDJ feature.

This is a "music locker" service, where we have uploaded our music onto their server, and can create playlists. They give us one URL which is our radio station, and we then enable/disable/schedule our playlists however we want. We paste that single URL into the media page for all our parcels, and our music plays continuously there, for whoever might drop by.

This website also supports a classic DJ function, but if you are just doing live gigs, you don't really need a service like this - you can just do it from your own PC using Shoutcast, Winamp or equivalent, and a clever plugin or two.

Yeah I was gonna say, the cheapest way is just to rent a stream inworld and use WinAmp or (if you want to go upscale) SAM Broadcaster to upstream to it. With both of those apps, you can make a playlist and just walk away and leave it running. Just get the URL and port number from the company you rent the stream from and plug that into the music URL in your land options. With WinAmp you will need the ShoutCast plugin, and I personally use a couple of other plugins when I DJ, one for crossfading and one for normalizing levels, so that music files that are recorded at different volumes sound SOMEWHAT more alike.

The only downside to this is, you'll be using a lot of bandwidth (upstream) and PC resources, so it will definitely slow you down. I notice a lot more lag in a club setting when I'm DJing, but some of that is, of course, due to the number of avs (and scripts running). Might not be so noticeable if it's just, say, you and a friend slow dancing in the living room.

EDIT: This info is all for a PC, and I just reread your original post and see that you are running OS X. I'm sure there are Mac equivalents for this stuff, just not sure what it is. Sorry.

You don't have to use winamp or SAM to play music saved on a server. Just rent one of the auto music servers from an in-world provider, upload your music there and plug the location URL into your land. I believe Neo-Streams offers this service. Shop around for the best price and the largest amount of server space.

Right. Just to be clear, there are two types of solutions being talked about here:

1. Upload your music to a server ("music locker";) and make playlists. The server streams it to SL, whichever parcels you plug your URL into, and can do so continuously, even if your home setup is powered off. This is a good solution particularly for folks (Europe?) who pay their ISP by the byte.

2. Stream music realtime from your own disk to a Shoutcast-like server. You can use whatever music player, set of playlists, etc. you like on your local setup - you just need a plugin that will send the stream to a Shoutcast, Icecast, whatever, server. You don't have to pay for storing the music online anywhere, but you DO use upload bandwidth whenever you are playing music. The music only plays while you are streaming.

Both solutions, depending on how you set it up and your provider, allow you to do 'voiceovers', like a DJ.
