Is it even possible to use dial up to run SL?

No.

Use SLeek or AJAX instead. ALL TEXT based. You will still be able to come here and chat and even sit on a pose ball and follow around a friend (auto follow that is).

Better than no SL at all if you want to chat with your pals.

Edit to add: SLeek is now called METAbolt.

Dial-up falls outside of SL's minimum requirements.

A friend of mine tried it once. She was able to log in, but found it slow to the point of maddening. That was roughly 2 1/2 years ago now

it is possible but you have to have your settings right..and you cannot do anything at all but connect and talk in im's ..i had to use it over the summer and i was lucky i had a 512 lot way up in the sky..i could go to other sims but it would take forever to even have part of it rezz..
it's impossible to do anything enjoyable ..but you can get on and use dialup for say emergency sl to communicate..but then they have messengers now for that too..

what dialup speed is it?

it would work on 256k or even 128k, 56k you can log in but it takes forever. you need to have your draw distance on minimum

Not until they fix the freaking texture cache. Or go to HTTP texture downloads so you can put a Squid cache in front of SL.

According to Shannon's Theorem the fastest speed you can get over a full-analog line is 35 kbps (eg, 33k modem), the highest speed you can get over a half-analog line is <60kbps (eg, 56k modem), and the highest speed you can get over a digital line is 64kbps (ISDN). 128k and 256k are broadband rates (well, I guess you could go 128k with bonded ISDN, but IDSL is cheaper over the same lines).

The short answer is no. The long answer is, well, still no.

Umm sortof, I managed to do so last year on 56kps, but it was crash every TP and 30minutes for rez time / inventory to load. But you could chat & IM ok.
Funny enough I also experienced similar symtoms when I hit my download limits and got throttled to 76kbs.
