I'm in a hotel - internet connection seems good, but I keep getting error that login packet is never received by the login server after attempting to get region handshake. Any suggestions on settings I should be trying?

I believe that is likely to be the firewall on the hotel system blocking the relevant port.

chances ar its packet blocking on UDP and TCP ports outside port 80, you can get web pages but pretty little else.

Talk to reception. Expect bafflement.
Radisson SAS have good signal strength ... in my experience.

I travel a lot sometimes, and yes, that happens to me on occasion. Sadly, the hotel staff are usually utterly naive and my intensity to show them how to modify these settings (the glazed over eyes and sheer desperation on my face for my fix) is always met with "I'm sorry, we can't do that". Good luck.

Most hotel wireless/broadband systems are leased from and managed by 3rd parties. In these cases, there is very little the hotel staff can do to accomodate special needs, as they often have no technical staff on property, and don't have administrative access to the switches/routers/firewalls servicing the facility. Many also opt for highly restrictive firewall rules, essentially only allowing http traffic. As the IT Manager of a large resort/hotel/conference center, I fought for (and won) purchasing the equipment outright, and therefore have complete control over it. You can bet that I made damn certain that Second Life works in the guestrooms From: Lucrezia Lamont I travel a lot sometimes, and yes, that happens to me on occasion. Did this occur on the very first try, or have you been able to fully log in at the hotel at all?
Reason I ask is that I'm traveling (typing this in my hotel room at the moment, as a matter of fact) and have been in-world every night this week. Last night, I dropped connection to the sim, had to log off, wait a couple of minutes, then hit this same error about 5 times in a row trying to log back on to the last place I was at.
I tried logging in to my Home Location and it went through. Not sure if selecting the Home Location before login cured anything or if it was coincidental.

Happens to me a lot in the USA when I stay in Hiltons and Hamptons but never in Europe for some reason. Each time I call the hotel 3rd party provider and they give me DNS settings or public IP to enter manually. These are the last ones they gave me to enter but not being a comp' wizard can't say if they will work. 12.180.1.200 255.255.255.192 12.180.1.194 12.127.16.67 12.127.17.72

I'm moving next week (or whenever we get to this closing thing) and I will have to stay in a hotel till my new co-op is renovated, before I can move in. I bought a wireless card and installed it. Now I'm worried it won't matter, as I won't be able to get into SL. Keep your fingers crossed guys!

After you connect to the hotel system, contact the help desk for internet access - should be a number listed on the information card. Request a Real IP, or Public IP. This way, the gateway server is not natting your traffic.
