You can earn $5 a noob you recruit ... some conditions apply. No porn and your website must not be ugly (must be aesthetically pleasing) in order to qualify.

Think this will help with increasing and retaining residents in SL?

It's cheap. This is what the $5 is for:-

From: someone
Receive a $5 (USD) commission via LinkShare for every new premium membership sale made within 30 days of clickthrough
Not only does a new person need to sign up having come from your site, but they also need to get a premium account within 30 days of the clickthrough - not even within 30 days of signing up. So introducing noobs gets nothing.

Hmmm. Seems they have still no budget, nor ambitions, to advertise their own product adequate.

No, SL has taught them that people will work for peanuts.

I think Slack should sign up The Forum Cartel website and we should all make any premium alts we need to make through that site. Put a few extra bucks into the Cartel coffers.

You think I'm kidding, don't you?

Wasn't there once a bonus if you got someone to go premium, and they used your name?

I've talked to a lot of people about going premium but never told them to mention my name - oh well.

No big deal. LL used to offer about 5 bucks worth of L$ as a "referral bonus" for *anyone* who used your avatar name as a reference on sign-up, and who went Premium within 30 days. (Or maybe it was only if they did it right at sign-up?) So if Sally Avatar was a Basic or even NPOF member, and her best friend in RL signed up for a Premium account, citing Sally as a referral, Sally would get a few L$, 30 days after the friend's Premium account was created.

They quietly stopped that, as far as I know, probably because the same jokers that were creating one-month Premium accounts to rip off the First Land program for 20 bucks profit per throwaway account were also trying to give one of their alts the referral bonuses for all those accounts, that they didn't intend to keep active after 31 days.

This sounds like just another approach to that old referral program, but requiring you to make and support a front-end website as well as generating the referrals.

When I joined around the beginning of 2007, there was a referral bonus - I used it for this account when I created it in July 2007. My then main account received a payment after 30 days and then another after 45 days or something to that affect. The total of the payments were roughly US$5, give or take a bit depending on the exchange rate.

I don't know why anyone would have scammed that though. The referral bonus paid to the referring avi, combined with the stipends that the new premium avi got, is less than 2 months of premium membership fees - and the person had to pay at least 2 months worth in order for the last referral payment to be made after 45 days.

This isn't a terrible idea. It's cheap marketing for Linden Lab, and provides more ways for potential customers to get to the account creation page.

When one takes into consideration the percentages (the fact that, after conditions, very few click-thoughs will actually net the $5.00), it probably doesn't motivate anyone to make lots of special effort to set this up. For someone who already has a web site related to Second Life, adding this feature may be an easy way to score an additional $5 here or there that one wouldn't otherwise be expecting. Maybe it's not a big reward, but for some people it is a nearly costless reward to receive.

At the time, when you still could purchase First Land at L$1 per M2 and sell it at 30 times that rate, you could make more than 20 dollars US by obtaining a 1-month Premium membership, buying and flipping your First Land and cashing out your first month's worth of L$ plus your own sign-up bonus (passing the profits to an alt), and then deleting the account just before the next dues payment came due. Using the referral bonus at the same time, paid to the same alt that you were siphoning profits to, could net you another 5 bucks free and clear on top of that.
