I always understood that it does. Is this not so?

If it didn't, then it would probably not still be around.

Actually, wouldn't it make more sense that they lose money, since people are no longer paying for that abandoned land?

not when they are recycling the land and charging each new 'owner' a setup fee.

Are there disclosed corporate earnings statements for LL? Are they making money or not? Just wondering...

Until we hear that the US federal government is planning a $5 billion bail-out of LL, it's safe to assume that Second Life is reasonably profitable!

Linden Lab is a privately owned company. Therefore financial statements are not available and it is not generally possible to determine if they made a profit during any particular period. However, it is a for-profit business and, we should assume, intends to make a profit.

Investors in LL include Mitch Kapor Catamount Ventures, Benchmark Capital, Ray Ozzie, Omidyar Network, Globespan Capital Partners, and Bezos Expeditions. Most financial statements are required to be made public only when stock of the business is publically traded. That is not the case here.

While things are not as bad as they were a decade ago, with the "dot.com" bubble, it is certainly likely that a business would be operated at a loss for a period of time. This is particularly likely during a recession. However, if they are not making a profit now, they must be profitable sometime in the future or they will not continue to exist.
