I know that I read somewhere about ideal skybox heights (privacy, lag, etc.) but I cannot find it. Can someone please shed some light?

Privacy depends on the area around your land.. my land is basically gonna have neighbours all the way up to 768m. That's why my Home is at 920m, and my workshop is at 4000 meters (Thanks to the RC being able to build that high)

As for lag, Havok4 changed it a bit I think.. for me, I haven't noticed any more lag at 700m for my Mistress and sister, 880-920 for my cuddle room and Home, or at 4000 for my workshop. (Any more lag than the ground I mean)

Everything seems fine to me!

Although most griefers stick close to the ground you will find more and more learning about flight assistants and flying above the default cloud level where one could fly up to unassisted.

Claire and I have had only one oddball character wander up to our front door in our skybox that is over 600 meters up. For privacy it is also good to have windows that shade, and to have a security system that gently nudges them away from your windows when you want privacy.

(I wasn't referring to CX though...lol)

Not sure what the optimum height is, but I would think that the higher the better.

There is no ideal height as such. The height should be as far away from other objects and people as possible. That will keep any lag down to a minumum, although there isn't usually anything that can be called lag high in the sky.

Our home is 600+ meters in the sky. We have a security orb but there haven't been many people (when we're at home) that I see show up on radar.

Except this one guy who must have flown really fast because he slammed into the window before being "escorted" away by the orb. It was kind of like seeing birds fly into glass windows and then drop. I hate when that happens to birds but with this guy it was humorous...lol.

Come to Hoini and check out our skyhomes.

The lowest is about 300m and the highest about 700, but placed around the sim so that everyone has the maximum privacy possible. No overhearing neighbours and each with a security system so that you can keep unwanted visitors out of your airspace.

You may not want to rent here, but at least you'll get an idea of a carefully thought out policy of separation - Thanks to the previous owner Rock Ryder for that.

I don't think there is a single ideal height; it depends upon what's around you.

I build my sky platform at 700m, and it was lovely and relatively isolated; shortly after I opened the cafe my neighbor built a ginormous sky empire about 20m higher so it towers over the corner of my platform.

There is other clutter around my sky platform too, belonging to other neighbors. Unfortunately, in my sim, there is junk all up and down at every height, so there simply is no ideal place for a platform. I keep my draw distance very low for performance reasons, so I can't see most of the crap floating beyond my borders. But I know many of my visitors see the various skyboxes and other junk that's out there.

forget privacy if u dont have private sim ...
lag depend of many things...sometimes height is not primary thing...
up in air there is no 2 many objects like on the ground so it take faster to download things...
but if that sim is overloaded with hard scripts ...going up will not solve problem

my skybox

My skybox is at 721 m up. I have had no problems or security issues, whereas a friend whose skybox is at 600 m has had some unwelcome drop-ins.
best,

Don't underestimate the attraction of a green dot (chevron) and the lengths some people will go to just to find out where you are and what's up there in the sky.

(Whether it's "laggy" or not - client-side, if the sim "lags" it'll "lag" regardless of altitude - will largely on your draw distance. If it's farther away than your draw distance, great, if it's within your draw distance it won't necessarily render, but the sim will still send you updates and the viewer will request some of the textures).

Too bad you didn't have a security cam. I would have paid to see that! LOL

I have to admit, I often go way up to find green dots... I just can't resist, if I'm bored I'll fly within cam range but not chat, see if it's a bot or person, and go away. If they're sexing, I'll take a couple snapshots, hop in for a chat...ok no I won't, I really do leave people alone, I just wanna see who's around!

TY all so much. I really appreciate your insight. How about a fair skyspace monthly rental price (without the structure)? Any thoughts?

Nice ass ;)

I'm always so surprised when I find people sexing... I cam away really fast, cause I don't wanna be a poot.

And when I'm sexing, if I see a green dot below me, I cam down to see if they're coming at us, so I can eject em if need be XD

Although my home is on the ground I have a platform at 600m which I use for building, testing etc. There's never any lag up there and I don't get bothered by people. There's also a club built by a friend, temporarily sitting at 700m above my land.

I have put up a test platform at 3000 metres to see for myself about the new building raised height limit.

I don't know if I'll move my main stuff up higher. I suppose it's a good idea to move things so they are out of view from ground level. I think I have been able, on occasions, to see my plaform from the ground with my draw distance set to 512 m, even though it's 580 m above the ground beneath (600 m above sea level).

How did that work for you Conifer? Were you able to build at 3000? I'm asking because all around and above my SL home are skyboxes and houses. One of our newer neighbors tends to play a lot with pewfers and the like and it tends to get a little laggy at times. I've considered rezzing a box just to build in as high as I could possible get it. I don't wanna be near any other skyboxes and if I could pull that off at 2 or 3,000, I'd be evah so delighted!

MoxZ, I put various sky platforms at 1500, 3000, and (I think) 4000 meters and had no problem rezzing or building in the RC viewer.

I think some of my neighbors may have built something near one of them, but outside my usual draw distance. I'd have to check again to be sure.

One thing to be aware of - I can't seem to make the viewer log me in any higher up than the old standard 768. I've left a platform around 600 where my partner and I (and a couple of friends) log in. If I log out of any of the higher builds and log back in at Last Location, I end up on the low platform. (If the platform weren't there, I think I'd end up either on the ground or falling, but I haven't tested it.)

My workshop is at 4000 meters. I build tons there, and have 4 projects under progress there at the moment. Of course, if I switch out of the RC and try to move something, it's shoved down to 968m. But I always use the RC so no problem!

You can build at 3000 but you have to put up with the horrible dazzle interface. It's great. You can't even see the ocean at that height. The higher ceiling will allow people to spread their skyboxes out more and will make it tougher to spy on people.

The lowest is about 300m

Isn't the height limit for displaying on the map 400m? I can't imagine you'd want your skybox lower than that.
